Leg Exercises that dont widen waist.
« on: March 05, 2010, 12:29:48 PM »
Squats and Dead lifts widen my waste to much. I love them but my waist gets to big. Any other exercises besides the basic Leg Press and Leg extensions that dont widen your waist?

squats wont widen your waist, they will build your abs, lower back, glutes, hip flexors, quads, and hams... and all of those musclkes surround the waist area...   and actually as they get more developed they will create and illusion of a smaller waist!

Excellent response from  TbombZ.

If waist is getting wider, than check the diet. Though the obliques, as a supporting muscle group, can become a little thicker with squatting/DL's.  Not being a large muscle group by nature, it should not be that noticed. Actually the ancient Greek & Romans favored obliques as a sign of power. Well developed in all strongmen lifters these days.

With due respect respect to my PL'ing friends: Those extra wide PL'ers, with overblown belly's and wide waist, just carry too much fat. There are very fat men, exceptionally powerful, with usually red line high blood pressure. The lighter division lifters tend to be  more in line with BB'ing development. Exceptions of course. Good Luck

Old wives tales...

Calories widen the waist when they aren't being used (as in excessive). As far as weight lifting exercises go, there aren't many exercises that would burn as many calories and build as much muscle mass as exclusively as squats and deads.

What level of bodyfat do you currently possess?

How big are your quads?

What is your waist measurement (right across the bellybutton)??

Keeping these variables in mind and being aware of them will help eliminate some of the random B.S you have heard or read.

The only type of squat I know of that widens the waist is the eccentric squat onto couch with an 8 hour pause at the bottom.

Hope this helps

Front Squats,  Dillinger Squats,  Paul Bunyon Squats,  Sissy Squats,  Hack Squats,  Reverse Hack Squats,  many options.  I think Squats will overdevelop the glutes, not the waist persay.

If you are worried about your waist appearing too large steer clear of oblique work or ab work all together for a few months.  Check your diet.

I used to make great gains doing deadlifts but my legs never really got any bigger doing squats,  front squats are a completely different story.

Anyone might try BB Hack Squats with the heels raised (2X4, pair of 45's, etc under the heels), to focus on the quads rather that the hips/glutes. One of my favorite leg movements. Think of it as a form of reverse Dl'ing and somewhat a whole body exercise. Front squats may also be improved by having the heels raise, for a better focus on that teardrop affect. Some find front squats much easier on the lower back than regular squats ever were. Good Luck.

Thats a good idea, I like where hack squats hit, but I also like the feel of conventional dead lift. I can also do rack pulls. Also have a another concern, that's getting wide obliques from doing squats,deadlifts.. Any ideas?
Thanks bro
