Tea Party harasses Dems with N-word and gay slurs
« on: March 21, 2010, 12:14:13 AM »
Why do they marginalize themselves when their message is so good?  Why let a few idiots let the party get labeled like this?  :(

tea party members, please start delivering your message with class, without these kinds of racist and homophobic slurs that get all the headlines.  You're 100% right on your message, something neither party can claim.  Don't give the mainstream media this kind of ammo to sink the tea party ship.  If you're at a rally and someone yells something like this, politely show them the door, no matter how angry you are.

A swarm of health care protesters, many holding Tea Party signs, heckled members of Congress with racial epithets and abusive language as the House votes on health care reform.

Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) was called a "homo," causing the surrounding crowd to erupt in laughter. A staffer for Rep. James Clyburn (D-S.C.) said a protester spat on Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-Mo.). Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.), a leader of the civil rights movement, was called a "ni**er."

Although Frank shrugged off the incident, Clyburn was shocked and told reporters that he hadn't experienced such treatment since leading protests in South Carolina in the 1960s.

"It was absolutely shocking to me," Clyburn told the Huffington Post. "Last Monday, this past Monday, I stayed home to meet on the campus of Claflin University where fifty years ago as of last Monday... I led the first demonstrations in South Carolina, the sit ins... And quite frankly I heard some things today I have not heard since that day. I heard people saying things that I have not heard since March 15, 1960 when I was marching to try and get off the back of the bus."

Rep. John Lewis was the first Democrat to leave a meeting of the Ways and Means committee. As he left, he was met by about 100 protesters crying out "Kill the bill!"

Sad, quite sad. I think that yes, they do have that message, but within that message is some racism--overtly or other. And Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas' wife is a supporter. I wonder what he has to say about that, or is a Uncle Ruckus type who agrees with them.

Not good.  But the tea party is a motley crew of different people who gather around a limited government message.  The basic ideas are sound but there are folks on the fringe that are asses like this.  It shouldn't reflect on the whole party but yes, there are wackos here and elsewhere.  I would not be interested in being part of the tea party but I do agree with many of their stated principles.  We saw some radicals get crazy on Bush too, the clown bumper stickers, repeatedly calling him stupid and various other names.  Like these few tea party folks, the anti-bush radicals took things too far but it comes from extreme frustration of the policies of the time.

If I was a tea party member, and I saw some idiot scremaing the N-word at a congressman, I would encourage those around me, to strongly encourage the offender to STFU.

Just like when you're having a peaceful protest, and there's one a-hole in the crowd who decides to throw beer bottles at the police.  You are ALL going to get your ass whooped, locked up, and labeled as troublemakers because there is one moron in the crowd you failed to self-police.

Loook at it this way... if you and 5 buddies are out having a beer, and one of them gets wasted and starts yelling N-word at other tables, you immediately check his ass, correct?

So why wouldn't you check fellow protesters, particularly when you're not just on display for the staff at a local Denny's... the entire nation is watching your new political party in its infancy.

Yeah, but there is a big difference though. Calling someone a clown is definitely not a good thing (and in my opinion GWB deserves to be put on the electric chair). But calling someone a nígga... knowing very well what did happen in the past in the USA with black Americans... it's an entirely different ballgame.

I don't recall mass lynchings of clowns in the South... Correct me if I'm wrong.

good point.  Reid was sucking up to Obama, but his wording was outdated and he got completely roasted for it.

Biden said Obama was 'clean' during the primaries - and they skewerd him as well.

That's the part I never did fully understand. I always assumed Biden's comment about Obama being clean, had to do with his record, and potential skeletons in the closet. I had thought that was what he'd refered to

Shows you the ignorance of the people an the fact that those they torment can at the drop of a dime change legislation to make LIFE ANS ABSOLUTE HELL. Continue to argue about things that are littel value while the BIGGER things crush them. While the masses wrangle with healthcare..no one has said a word about jobs, economy, coming food shortage adn what will be done, trillions given to banks and Wall Street buddies...yadda yadda yadda. Lets not get into the sudden rise in fees, costs and taxes on everything that is effecting everyone.

House Republicans denounce racial slurs hurled at Democrats
Posted: March 21st, 2010 11:55 AM ET

On CNN's State of the Union, Rep. Mike Pence, R-Indiana, called the slur directed at Rep. John Lewis, D-Georgia, 'contemptible.' 'I denounce it in the strongest terms,' Pence said.

Washington (CNN) - House Republican leaders criticized the use of slurs against Democratic congressmen by protesters on Capitol Hill Saturday, but they called them isolated incidents that shouldn't overshadow the debate over health care.

Three Democratic African-American lawmakers - including civil rights leader Rep. John Lewis of Georgia - said demonstrators against the health care bill yelled racist epithets at them as they walked past. Rep. Emanuel Cleaver of Missouri said a protester spit at him. Rep. Barney Frank of Massachusetts, an openly gay Democrat, said protesters yelled anti-gay comments at him.

House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, called the incidents "reprehensible" but said on NBC's Meet the Press "let's not let a few isolated incidents get in the way of the fact that millions of Americans are scared to
death, and millions of Americans want no part of this growing size of government."

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, appearing on NBC, said, "I think the tone of the this entire debate has been denigrated, has been brought down, frankly, by the rhetoric on government takeover, socialism, things that are not accurate."

"Nobody condones that at all," said House Minority Whip Eric Cantor, R- Virginia. on ABC's "This Week." "There were 30,000 people here in Washington yesterday. And, yes, there were some very awful things said."

Cantor appeared with House Democratic Caucus chairman John Larson, D-Connecticut, who said the incidents show "everybody ought to ratchet back just a little bit."

Asked about Larson's comment, Cantor said "you know what it is time for? It's time to listen to the American people, and that is the stunning thing about this."

On CNN's "State of the Union," Rep. Mike Pence, R-Indiana, called the slurs "contemptible," saying, "I denounce it in the strongest terms."

Andrew Langer, the president of one of the groups that sponsored Saturday's protest, issued a statement Sunday condemning the incidents. "The Institute for Liberty roundly condemns the isolated incidents of intolerance that occurred … As a core value, the Tea Party movement believes in the precept upon which our independence was declared and this nation was founded: that all men are created equal."

As demonstrators gathered outside the Capitol Sunday to rally against the bill, one held a sign saying, "All tea partiers: If you hear a racial slur, step away, point, boo and take a picture of the rat bastard."

"I haven't seen or heard anything like this in more than 40 years, maybe 45," the 70-year-old Lewis said. "Since the march from Selma to Montgomery really."

"Yeah, but it's OK," Lewis said. "I've faced this before. So, it reminded me of the '60s. There's a lot of downright hate and anger. and people are just being downright mean."

Cleaver released a statement late Saturday saying he, too, was the target of the "n" word as he walked to the Capitol for a vote and that he was spat on by one protester who was arrested by U.S. Capitol Police. Cleaver declined to press charges against the man, the statement said.

"I'm disappointed," Frank said. "There's an unwillingness to be civil."

Frank, who said he rarely hears such slurs anymore, said the health care issue has become "the proxy for a lot of other sentiments. A lot of which are perfectly reasonable but some of which are kind of ugly. ... People out here today on the whole were, many of them, were hateful and abusive."

Slapper, no argument there and not condoning what that idiot said in any way.

Makes me irritated that people like this are the ones who get the spotlight instead of folks with intelligent legit complaints against what is going on in Washington.  These fringe idiots don't even realize they are drawing so much attention that they are hurting the very idea they support...frustrating for people like me who are pragmatic and detail oriented.  I still argue that idiots like this are a small minority.

VERy cool that house repubs denounced it.

Shoot - the ppl in the crowd need to escort these rude people out of the crowd by their belt-loop and collar.  I promise, if FOX cameras (always present!) were to cover the crowd self-policing against racists, the party would gain a lot of respect from moderates.

Ha,ha,ha oh no a few kooks were shouting slurs.Yet the democrats let AL SHARPTON and JESSE JACKSON address the democratic convention just about every year. Not a peep from the sensitive 240.Obama sat in a church listening to a man blame "dem jews" for everything and in 20 years Hussein said not a peep.Yes,the democrats getting upset at slurs is about the most amusing thing in the world. They use race all the time and even had the balls to say the health care bill was as improtant as the civil rights legislation. They are a joke, its too bad instead of slurs the crowds didnt have guns, they could have done a lot more good.
