Pumping Iron Creator George Butler Visits PBW (Replay Now Available!)

33 Years after he introduced Arnold to the world......meet the one & only George Butler!

In 1972, while covering The Mr. Universe contest for Life Magazine, George Butler began a journey that would lead to the 1977 release of a documentary film called Pumping Iron.  The film not only chonicled the 1975 Mr. Olympia (Pretoria, South Africa) but it also introduced the world to a young Austrian named Arnold and a determined 23 year-old from from Brooklyn named Lou. - Presented by MuscleTech, "Pro Bodybuilding Weekly" is pleased to present a special visit with Pumping Iron creator George Butler for a look back at his cult-classic and the overwheliming impact his film had on the sport of bodybuilding and the subsequent success of its two biggest stars, Schwarzenegger & Ferrigno. - LIVE on  Monday, March 29th at 8pm ET.

If 'Pumping Iron' is never made, where are Arnold and Louie today?

I'm betting Arnold is still a rich and successful businessman, quietly living in South California.  Probably way more involved in the sport.  Maybe even working as Athlete's Rep!

I'm betting Louie never does the Incredible Hulk.  Instead, I'm betting he wins 5 or 6 Olympia titles.  I'm betting he completely dominates that 'swimmers era' from 1976 until 1983.

I'm betting the sport of bodybuilding is a lot smaller.  There is no getbig, in such a terrible world.

Pumping Iron forced Louie to become the Hulk instead of winning a bunch of Olympias.  No question about it.

Ha  haaaaaaa. I keep running into Lou.   I p'd him off at Golds once. Then he came by MY OFFICE  (law enforcement) to squeal on someone. When my co-worker introduced him to me   his face was cherry red  and he mummbled something like  "Yaaa member u frum galds"  We ended up on a flight back to LA from Dallas also. The pilots asked for an autograph   Lou said he'd give them one if they let him on the plane first.  Before a lady in a wheelchair!  Same ole Lou!   I wish I could have the belt his dad beat his ass with    he may have givin it to Arnold or Serge Nubret.

I bet without this movie to culminate Arnold's career and give him that shot to go out on top... Lou would have come into his prime and beat Arnold once or twice.  There's no way Lou loses to Arnold in 1980 or 1981 if they both stayed in Bbing.

Dan should ask who's currently got the rights to the movie and the unused footage? Is it Arnold? And why doesn't put out the unused footage?

I agree...great question!! We all want to see the unused footage and its been locked away for no reason... George should tell us straight up of why the footage hasnt been released yet!

yeah, my guess is that Arnold wouldn't benefit much at all from such a release.

Good interview, but George was slightly off saying Lou is 6'8" tall.  Bob tried to correct him and mentioned that Lou is 6'5".  George then came back and said Lou is 6'7".

Lou Ferrigno is actually 6 foot 10.

When he is standing on the stack of money he gets for signing autographs.

Great interview with Butler.. He's a cunnning geezer.. Lol @ him correcting Chick about Ferrigno's height!

His answers weren't what I expected to hear.. Very coy about what he still retains from the period. This is a must for a re listen!

I liked the power play with Bob (correcting the height of Lou)..

The re invention of Matty Ferrigno was different mentioning a "wonderful" relationship.

It was interesting hearing how much of a control freak Arnold is.
