Funny you don't mention your hero sport MMA and one of the champions in it (Machida) using Aikido as well
There is a clip floating around on the net where it shows Machida in the UFC using Aikido techniques and moves but I can't find it at the moment.
Once I have it I will post it for you.
In the meantime keep proving my point about you being clueless about the difference exercise and application and posting these videos to show it.  :-*

Aikido is a waste of time, unless you have a lifetime to devote to the art, it's too spiritual, most of it is the same b.s the inverted arms locks and hip throws, my buddy dropped it after 7 years, he said after 7 years of religiously studying it he didn't feel confident in a real life fight situation , and ended up getting his ass kicked several times by guys with no martial arts experience. He later switched to muay thai with me and tried a few other styles that actually work.

Aikido is a waste of time for him and it's his right and choice to look for other better suited martial arts.
Muay thai is great as well, tough/intense training, developing nice/hard shins.
I love Muay Thai!

I did it for 4-5 years, great style, you can use it effectively in a fight after a few months.

I agree. How cool were your first few weeks in muay thai where you could barely could stand the feeling of your jeans resting on newly bruised shins?  :D Showing off your black and blue shins with pride to your friends was the way to go back then!
I train aikido since 1991, muay thai since 1996 and jiu jitsu for 2 years now.
Love the fact I that I can handle situations up close with aikido and muay thai (clinching, knees, elbows) and am also not afraid anymore if it ends up on the ground but ofcourse with my limited 2 year training on the floor there are lots of areas that still need to be covered on the floor.
Having that said: all 3 of those martial arts have their strong and weak points, but cross training seems to be the key word here especially now with the MMA where everybody is cross training as well.

Happy shin icing!!  ;)

Haha, I saw van Damme in a club once and was surprised at how short he is in real life.
Also attended a 3 day seminar with Seagal in 1994 and was also surprised at how tall he is.
van Dammes high kick might reach Seagals chest when fully extended  ;D

As someone who has trained Aikido for years you do not need a lifetime of training to apply Aikido to real life fight situations.  You can redirect punches and kicks of attackers rather effortlessly if you understand some of the basic concepts, and many people misconstrue Aikido to be all "arm locks" or "throws", whereas most of these moves are simply a byproduct of the redirection of your opponents energy.

In the case of your friend his instructors and his own capability may be the reason he feels that he cannot translate what he has learned into useful tactics in real life confrontations.

I doubt it, he is an extremely athletic guy, played hockey, basketball, baseball, ran track and field, well built, good size..  He just found it extremely lacking and overall too defensive (the whole transfer of motion/energy b.s) guys that know how to fight will destroy most aikido practitioners, it seems aikido only really works on drunk bar brawlers who've never been in a real fight and run towards their opponent blindly with their eyes closed at full speed, like you see in most aikido videos.

Which city does he take class and for how long now?
In Severna Park, MD. He took it for about 6 months. He was using me "for practice"...
He stopped due to work...I supported him in finding something that he liked, that he wanted to learn from.

I think Americans spend too much time trying to find something that they can "kicks someone ass", basically because they influenced by pop culture, tv,movies and want to be hard asses.
Your ass gets arrested for assault, the martial arts don't protect you from being found guilty nor if you are in jail, when 4 dudes who outweigh you by 50-100 pounds come at you at the same time...you better know some deep breathing and MMA rectal clentches---cause that is your ass...
And many times now, dudes who lose fights go and "pop the trunk"...something I think is cowardly, but that is the way it is, lose a fight, then it's the way of the gun.

Whomever thinks aikido is not effective in a real fight is smoking crack. Some old masters are so adanced even trained MMA fighters cannot handle them

Let me illustrate my point

Most upper level martial arts practitioners aren't using a lot of effort. When you look at old Gracie, Ueshiba (sp?), and other masters they are expending the minimal amount of energy possible.

I'm no fan but Segal is a 7th Dan and ran a dojo in Japan.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess reading isn't one of your strong points, LOL!

Aikido's founder was a 100% proven badass. In fact he's still hated by many Russians.

When someone's really skilled things look easy. White guy running a successful Aikido dojo in Japan is huge.

I wouldn't say that is fake, my brother takes akido and he was saying that the pros look like that. You are taught how to roll, but the movement are done in a effortless manner...and he started doing them to me...I didn't know to roll, and when he began he didn't either.

That being said, his assistant should have made fun of his sensitive  Ponytail...that would have made him back off.

::)  You know nothing about real fighting.....please tell your brother don't ever get into a fight.....same goes for yourself.......you'll both get your asses kicked if you think what is in that video is real or in the least bit effective.  LOL........

What martial art is Van Damme trained in? Karate or Tae Kwon Doe or what?
