Stationary bikes and HIT cardio?
« on: April 26, 2010, 02:57:41 PM »
good idea?

I did it today and while the cardiovascular part wasnt quite as difficult as say burpees it was pretty difficult.

I did 8 intervals at 20sec exercise and 15 sec breaks

It was a bike that is used in spinning class not the one where you sit back like a recliner...

So long as your heart rate was pounding like hell during those 20 sec. intervals.

You just reminded me that it's almost time to be starting Tabata (in another couple weeks).
I'm already adjusting the diet.

yesh yesh usually the burpees make me want to stop about round 4 its pretty hard to make 8 for me and this was too but I was able to get to about round 5 or 6 before i really wanted to quit I made all 8 though.

The burpees seem to hurt my elbows and shoulders especially when i get in the later rounds and im basically just flopping on the floor using my arms to stop me.

I think im going to keep this in the routine very nice easy on the joints exercise for tabata.

The Tabata protocol (developed by Dr Tabata, Japanese sports medicine national center) is one of the better forms of interval training. Requires 20 seconds of full out effort, than 10 seconds complete rest. No tension on the resting muscle area during those 10 seconds rest. A spin type bike(among other ways)  was used in the  development of this training method.

The aerobic and anaerobic are both worked at or near the highest V02 max capacity's and at the same time. Results: encourage fat burning, even at a resting state between workouts. Does not affect muscle mass, while long durations of cardio may limit or even cause muscle mass lose. Usually 2 or 3 workouts a week are only required for most.

T-tones has an exceptional level (even at 15 seconds rest) of  fitness to get 8 cycles done. Top level athletes will usually do from 6 to 8 cycles. Doing more that 8 cycles would be counterproductive  in most cases. The spin type bike is an excellent choice. Rowing machine are also used with outstanding results. A friend of mine works in a high rise building in Century City (LA)  and he does the Tabata method running up stairs, during  his break time. Seems to clear his head for the rest of the day. Good Luck.

I've been experimenting with tabata for the last couple of weeks and have found the stationary bike and very, very light front squats to be the best for me. Despite using burpees and the rowing maching elsewhere in my training, I found that i couldn't get the required intensity with them.

I'm going to try it with star jumps next week and see how that goes.
