Toys banned in some California fast food restaurants
By Sara Bonisteel, Special to CNN
April 28, 2010 4:28 p.m. EDT

About a dozen fast food restaurants in unincorporated areas of Silicon Valley are affected by the ordinance.

STORY HIGHLIGHTS
Ordinance limits toys on items over 200 calories or more than 480 milligrams of sodium
Toys also banned in meals with more than 485 calories.
Decision has angered the California Restaurant Association
Poll says 80 percent of residents don't think toy issue is important

(CNN) -- A California county on Tuesday became the first in the nation to ban toys from fast food kids' meals high in calories, fat, salt and sugar.
Santa Clara County supervisors voted 3-2 to ban the plastic goodies as promotions in meals with more than 485 calories.
County supervisor Ken Yeager said Tuesday that the ordinance "prevents restaurants from preying on children's love of toys to peddle high-calorie, high-fat, high-sodium kids' meals," and would help fight childhood obesity.

"This ordinance breaks the link between unhealthy food and prizes," Yeager said. "Under this ordinance, restaurants are still permitted to give out toys. This ordinance merely imposes very specific, common-sense nutrition standards for children's meals that are linked to these incentives."
The ordinance will ban restaurants from giving away toys with meals that have more than 485 calories, more than 600 milligrams of sodium, more than 35 percent of total calories from fat or more than 10 percent of calories from added sugar. It would also limit toy giveaways on single food items with more than 200 calories or more than 480 milligrams of sodium.
But the decision, which affects about a dozen fast food restaurants in unincorporated areas of Silicon Valley, has angered the California Restaurant Association, which fought the proposal with ads in local newspapers. One asks "Who Made Politicians the Toy Police?" and shows a child in handcuffs in front of a cop.

The group commissioned a poll of local residents that found 80 percent didn't think the toy issue was an important one.
"From our perspective, we were echoing what our customers had to say. Obviously we felt that this proposal was excessive and I think purposely provocative," said Daniel Conway, the association's director of public affairs.
Conway said the association was disappointed local officials didn't come to them before creating the ordinance.

"We try to proactively engage with policy makers at the local level, the state level and the federal level," Conway said. "At the national level, our industry just played a critical role in passing a national menu labeling standard, so that now customers in many restaurants will be able to have in front of them the exact nutritional content of the various menu items."
Yeager said at a press conference Tuesday that he hopes the ordinance will spark other counties and states to pass similar legislation.
Restaurants will have a 90-day grace period beginning May 11 before the ordinance goes into effect.

Crazy. Wanna end childhood obesity?

1. Promote the hell out of the caloric needs for kids.

2. Have doctors report parents who let their kids become obese.

Of course this wouldn't work since it would require people to look at labels, and that would require knowing how to read.

I think you're going a little far with this bit. The fat content is undesirable and the amount of grease in most of it is disgusting. Compare it to what you can make at home yourself. It's nasty.

None of this makes sense though. No toys? lol. So now they'll get fat unhappily with no toys included. Don't blame the fast food. Blame the parents who don't encourage activity and a healthy lifestlye. I ate tons of Jack in the Box western style cheeseburgers and double cheeseburgers when I was younger and I was skinny as a rail.

Personally I don't see the problem with this - the US has already got an obesity crisis - the less screaming little brats you get into McDonalds to eat their Happy Meals and play with their "toys" the better.

Wrong.

My Green Chile Cheeseburger that I make at home are 890 calories.  A whopper is only 560.  :-\

All Fast Food companies use the same fat content in their meat which is 80/20 which is what I use and what is the best ratio for Hamburgers.

Hope this helps.

Here is the recipe if anyone is interested.  As you can see, its more caloric than Fast Food.  I HIGHLY recommend making it!

Throwdown's Green Chile Cheeseburgers

Serves: 4

Queso Sauce
1 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 tablespoon flour
1 cup whole milk
12 ounces Chihuahua or Monterey Jack cheese, coarsely grated
¼ cup grated parmesan cheese
Salt and freshly grated pepper

Melt the butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1 minute. Add the milk, increase the heat to high and cook, whisking constantly, until slightly thickened, about 5 minutes. Remove from the heat and whisk in the cheese until melted; add the parmesan and season with salt and pepper. Keep warm.

Green Chile Relish
1 medium poblano chile, roasted, peeled, seeded and thinly (page TK)
2 Hatch chiles, roasted, peeled, seeded and thinly sliced (page TK)
1 serrano chile, roasted, peeled, seeded and thinly sliced (page)
¼ cup red wine vinegar
1 tablespoon honey
2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
3 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper

Combine all ingredients in a bowl and season with salt and pepper.

Pickled Red Onions
1 ½ cups red wine vinegar
¼ cup water
2 tablespoons sugar
1 tablespoon kosher salt
1 medium red onion, peeled, halved and thinly sliced

Bring vinegar, water, sugar and salt to a boil in a small saucepan. Remove from the heat and let cool for 10 minutes. Put the onions in a medium bowl, pour the vinegar over, cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours and up to 48 hours before serving.

Burgers
1 ½ pounds ground beef
1 tablespoon canola oil
4 hamburger buns, split and lightly toasted
12 blue or yellow corn tortilla chips, coarsely crushed
1. Heat your griddle or large sauté pan over high heat. Add the oil and let heat until it begins to shimmer.
2. Shape the ground beef with your hands into 4 round patties about 1 ½ inches thick and season each burger on both sides with the salt and pepper. Cook the burgers until golden brown on both sides and cooked to medium, about 8 minutes.
4. Place the burgers on the buns and top each with a few tablespoons of the queso sauce, chiles, onions and chips.

Maybe I am wrong? I'll take your side and agree I am. When I make food at home I know what's in it, and it's a hell of a lot better than that greasy shit they pass off as food at Mcdonald's and Burger King etc.... I guess you could factor in I don't spend much on fast food, and you do get what you pay for. But in the end for me cooking at home trumps fast food 9 times out of 10.

Without Mayo its 520 and with just light amount of Mayo its about 570.  Sometimes I get them all different ways.

My burgers at home PWN the caloric amount still and I would never even think about eliminating Mayonnaise at home.  :)

Also, without Mayo you are looking at 520 calories and 23 grams of fat.  No Mayo and adding Cheese brings it to 560 with 31 grams of Protein.  Good stuff right there.

Just focus on overall calories and by default you will have a good range of Macros by default.

To an extent I agree with this. I take the little maybe twice a month. She sometimes get the apples in lieu of the fries, hell sometimes she wants a salad and Ill buy the toy for a few bucks. Its about moderation. I know alot of parents that use mickey d's or burger king as an award. HELLO fast food shouldn't be a reward for doing their chores or getting an A..but that is my opinion

How can anyone argue with this decision.  Everyone on this board makes fun of the obese and permabulkers.  The toys make the kids want to get that food.  These kids aren't burning the calories required to work off that food = fat kids.  This is no good for anyone.

Forget about claories and look at other factors - high sodium, high cholesterol, high saturated fat - all things that leads to coronary issues = greater expense to us all through increased medical care.

How much do you figure the base maintenance calories are for someone 3.5' tall and 65lbs? 1000? 750?  Regardless, one happy meal and they have more than half of their daily calories, and they still have 2 meals to go (plus snacks).

Well it's called "parenting". A parent giving into a screaming little brat, isn't parenting.

Yes, the govt does such a wonderful job "parenting" those on welfare, etc... that now they need to start parenting for everybody.....
