Sheriff to spearhead ballot effort for Ohio immigration reform

Staff Report   Updated 12:08 PM Thursday, April 29, 2010

HAMILTON — Butler County Sheriff Richard K. Jones announced today, April 29, he will spearhead efforts to have a statewide “citizens initiative” placed on the ballot for Ohio immigration reform.

Fearing recent letters he sent jointly with state Rep. Courtney Combs, R-Hamilton, to Ohio leaders won’t be enough to get immigration reform on the “fast track” for Ohio, Jones said he wants the voters to decide the issue in November.

Combs has indicated he agrees, and will also lend support and guidance to the initiative effort, according to Jones. Jones said he is taking this step because Gov. Ted Strickland has indicated he plans to block immigration reform legislation that is similar to a law recently passed in Arizona.

“Our federal government has let us down on immigration reform,” Jones said in a prepared statement. “I’m afraid our state legislature may not want to act on it either. Governor Strickland has already indicated he plans to veto any legislation similar to Arizona’s new immigration law that might make it to his desk. If the majority of voters in Ohio want it done, it’s probably going to have to be their initiative to be the driving force.”

Jones said he the acknowledges that to get any citizen initiative for immigration reform ready and placed on the ballot for November won’t be easy.

“There are lots of legal papers to file, thousands and thousands of signatures on petitions to collect, and you have to get the word out to everyone,” he said. “I also expect the effort will be highly contested by those who maybe just want to wait for the federal government to act. Just because it’s hard doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try.

“There is no way I can personally do this,” Jones added. “But, I know there are firms out there who specialize in all aspects of these types of initiatives. They have all the resources available to accomplish this task. I have already made some preliminary contacts, and plan to do whatever I can to get this ball rolling. Ohioans themselves need to take the lead on immigration reform in Ohio.”

Strickland said on Wednesday, April 28, that he wouldn’t sign into law an immigration control measure like the one that just went into effect in Arizona.

yeah, Rudy and Bloomberg have made NYC a 'sanctuary city'.   Romney said so in 2008.

You guys should stop electing dems and RINOs as mayor.

Yes, you wouldn't believe the amount in Hamilton.  There's an area that actually looks like it could be Mexico.  :o  Not saying they're all illegal, but I'd bet 90% are.

Ohio prostitution operation busted, served illegal aliens
The Butler County Sheriff's Office in Hamilton, Ohio has busted a prostitution operation that served illegal immigrants. Detectives had received a confidential tip that an illegal immigrant named Primo was supplying prostitutes to other illegals in the county.

After making multiple calls to Primo's cell phone, undercover agents met with Primo and a prostitute. The undercover officers and the duo proceeded to a Hamilton motel. The prostitute charged $80 for two men.

Primo, actually Logan Carrasco-Zambrano, and the prostitute, Violeta Urena-Deluna, were arrested in the parking lot of the motel. Carrasco-Zambrano, 28, said he came to the U.S. illegally, two years ago, from Honduras. He is charged with two counts of promoting prostitution, a fourth-degree felony. Urena-Deluna, 45, stated she has been in the United States, illegally, for 28 years. She was charged with two counts of prostitution, a third-degree misdemeanor.

Both may face deportation procedures after answering for their stated charges. Investigation of the prostitution operation is ongoing.

Butler County Sheriff Richard K. Jones of Butler County has earned a reputation of being tough on illegal aliens. Two years ago, Jones posted six billboards by roadways in the county which said, “Hire an illegal — break the law!”

I know what's going on, still I don't want the police to have more power to abuse me because of these criminals.

Yes, I'm sure this will get parlayed into them harassing "blue-eyed, blond haired" American citizens.

So much rampant assuming going on. Does anyone have any hard evidence to back up that this will lead to police violating the rights of American citizens or is it just speculation?

I'm excited about what this law will do, and hope to see something like it come to be in my state.  Still, you've got to remember that when you give police an inch they'll take a mile...  :-\

Yes, a few isolated police officers will. The majority of LEO don't abuse their power. This can be evidenced by the fact that it's national news almost anytime a LEO does do something egregious.

I find that most people constantly complaining about police abuse are usually up to no good.  :D

And is it really that hard to carry some form of identification whenever you go out. I thought most intelligent people did this already. Or maybe my parents were smarter than most when they taught me to always have some form of ID on me when I leave the house in case something should happen to me.  ::)

I carry ID, but I shouldn't have to legally.

Hope they don't throw me on the train to Auschwitz when I forget my papers...  :-X

Nice. A massive assumption tied in with a reference to Nazis. Impressive how you managed to do both in one sentence. You work for MSNBC?

Would you travel through a European country without any papers? Or let's say if you were an American working in another country. Would you show cops your papers if they stopped you on the street and ask for them if you were in, say, Germany? I'm pretty sure the state department recommends that all American citizens working or travelling in another country always carry some form of identification on them.

YES!

I wouldn't be caught dead in any foreign country without ID.

And?

Well then, why can't the illegals do it? Or does this boil down to the fact that most illegals don't have any form of identification with which to identify themselves?

Well then, why can't the Mexicans do it?

Don't get me wrong, my only concern is for legal citizens like myself who could have their rights violated by police that will abuse this law.

I couldn't give a shit less about Mexican citizens, or illegals.

I realize the chance of being a victim of some kind of abuse by the government is small, but I really don't like to mess around when it comes to our freedom.

I will your rights be violated? At most I can see the police asking you to wait a few seconds while they check your SS number and your DOB. What rights do you think they're going to be violating by doing this when they already do it? Do you honestly think they're going to do something like set-up checkpoints to check everyone's ID?  ::)

If this law gives them the right to do something like that, than absolutely.

My point, is that we need to be very careful with this.  Surely you can agree with that?

What about the rights of legal citizens not to have their country trashed by these people?
