That's not waht you said.  You said jay and Ronnie did it right, thereby implying that they were not involved inthe "underbelly."  But you don't know that, do you?  Do you beleive the image that every public personality puts out?

Face the facts folks, BB has always had a "dark side". Why?
Go back to the 60's and steroids were always a part of any serious BB's regime. Even before the federal gov made steroids a felony in 1990, useing roids was dubious and kept under wraps. In the 60's and 70's many bodybuilders trained at Venice Beach Ca or in NYC at a few well known "famous gyms". Most bodybuilders lacked any viable work skills or the desire the work a full time job.Unlike big time pro sports, the $$ earned directly from BB was small and inconsistant. Remember the 1st Mr O got a 1000 bucks on a silver plate.
They needed plenty of food, roids and time to train, etc. This led to hustling ( aka gay4pay, pose/play, etc).
Plenty of older, wealthy gay men wanted to "hook up" with the younger bodybuilders. Arnold talks openly about this in his book ;" Education of a BB". He tells of his involvement with a wealthy gay man called "Schrenck". In this account , Arnold claims it never got intimate and leaves it at that.
Unlike a lot of bodybuilders, Arnold had incredible work ethic and ambition beyond the gym. We all know the story of Arnold and his success, but how many "Arnold's" did BB produce? one!
The top male pro bodybuilders TODAY make enough from supplement contracts and BB related income to avoid "hustling".
However, plenty of lower tier pro , ( and amatuer)BB's engage in various forms of hustling today.
Due to the limited amount of $$$ to be made from female BB, a much larger % of top female BB's engage in various forms of hustling.
Think about it....combine a long history of hustling with required illegal drug use to win and you have a recipe for a perpetual dark side in any sport.
Of course 90% of those who enjoy BB as a lifestyle and hobby never deal with this dark side.
