Gym machines are for intelligent bodybuilders and fitness people. If I had my way I would toss all the free weights in the ocean. This free weights vs machines is a really silly argument. Gyms exist because of machines. Don't forget that. The barbell is almost dead except among dumbbells. Sure you can get a workout with them but they are not very good tools. I don't care what some musclemen say. Science will eventually prove that machines are superior.

Science...every supplement company has their proof in "science"  ::), the world is fucked and science is corrupt there are no needs for machines. It's all about money to earn for the manufacturers.

Take a look at the gyms 50 years ago, they only had simple equipments, are we more athletic or well built today? Yes, some bodybuilders are, but thats not bcz of some gymmachines thats because of heavy drug use.

You will take your beliefs and ideas to your grave. Doesn't mean you are right.

Even the biggest dumbbell uses machines. Lat machine, rowing machine, calf machine, leg extension, leg curl, chest press, seated rowing, ab machine, etc., etc. These are essential machines for complete training.

Those wanting to see more squat machines and other leg machines look here:

Having had over 90% of my cartilage removed from both knees I wish I had something like that. When you can lean back and the knees don't go pass your toes in the full squat position it really takes the pressure off the knee joint.
I also have osteoarthritis. How you train your legs now with them knee? I have stopped training legs for 1 year and the pain now is even worse-even by walking...

Maybe for bodybuilding. Show me one trainee who exclusively does machines that has comparable, full body strength with a strongman, powerlifter, or olympic lifter ?

Sorry Vince, machines serve 2 purposes, isolation and peak contraction, 2 things you never use in everyday life. I can see it for bodybuilding but that's about it. Saying if it were up to you, you get rid of all free weights is a naïve statement.

I agree on getting rid of free weights is a naive statement and I actually prefer free weights over machines, but I never understood why training in the gym has to mimic real life experiences.  ???

Take two athletes who are not bodybuilders and have them train for strength.  One will sit in 12 machines to work out in.  He will sit to work legs, back, delts, pecs, bicep, calfs and triceps. The other will do power cleans, squats, bench presses, chins, and other non machine basics.  I know who will be able to transfer their strength in the real world.

Bodybuilding "experts" are delusional about how a real athlete should train.

There was a machine made in the USA that looked interesting. I can't find the photo. It is important to get the right arc in the movement. Then you have to make sure it is safe to use and you can't get trapped if you don't lift the weight up. Most of the designs seem a bit too small but that is what happens when you design for commercial gyms. Few here understand the challenge of designing effective equipment that accommodates all individuals.

I also have osteoarthritis. How you train your legs now with them knee? I have stopped training legs for 1 year and the pain now is even worse-even by walking...

I use a product called Alflutop. I've been using it for the last five months and all joint pain in the elbows and shoulders have gone. The knees are better but there's still pain and stiffness but at least there's a noticeable improvement. I check my surgical records and they remove 96% of the cartiladge in one knee and 94% on the other. And this was over ten years ago so I don't have much to work with. But once I'm warmed up I'm good to go now that I'm on the Alflutop. We got a Smith machine at our gym and I do squats on that. I put my feet forward enough so that when I'm in the full squat position (butt to ankles) my knees are behind my toes. I then super set that with body weight squat holding on to the rack so that my upper body is well behind my knees. Kind of like a sissy squat but I don't raise my heels. The next day my knees still feel pretty shot but it gets better by the second day.

Alflutop is from Romania (I finally found a second good thing about that country, the first being Nadia Comaneci) and if you can handle the treatment it does work. You have to give yourself a daily injection for 20 days in a row and I now am on a maintenance program of 3 injections a week (Mon, Weds, Fri). I eventually plan to incorporate Synvisc which a fluid that is injected directly into the knee joint and forms a gel that both cushions and lubes the joint. It suppose to last about six months. Insurance doesn't cover it so it's about $600 a shot for each knee. The product itself costs about $200. Once I see where and how the doctor injects it I will just do it myself. I'm not the squeamish type.

Alflutop is not that expensive. You can get a box of 10 amps for $30. So you'll need 2 boxes for the initial treatment. Here's a study done on it.

Thank you for answer. My doc also adwised to inject Synvisc, but I am not desidet yet to. heard if you start it you can`t live without it enymore. For last year I have been doing only some wall sits and riding bike to maintain muscle mass. Now start to think about incorporating leg presses , but sceared to make things worse and waste all cartilige that I have left Actualy I wated it much by doing heavy lunges ower past ten yers and being on relativy high bodyweight for OA). On other hand you should keep your quads strong to reduce pain as I understand. I ame only 32 years old.

1.all drugs

I don't straight up say this to people often, but son, that is a retarded statement. It doesn't matter what amount of "drugs" he is on or not. That is a good amount of weight to be doing on squats, especially considering his size.

Wow. When I hear or read people expressing their opinions on free-weights like this I know it is a lost cause trying to talk sense in to them. This is...bad.

All drugs or not that video still impresses the hell out of me. Doing reps with that weight is not easy.  Can you do it?

It is always a challenge to make a machine that effectively and safely works the thighs. The best machine I have used in the Nautilus Duo Squat that I modified. The best test of how a machine feels is to load it up. For example, Cybex made what seemed like a nice horizontal leg press but when you loaded it up it put too much stress on the knees so I don't think it was a good machine.

The Bear Squat doesn't seem to be quite right. You can see the angle of the pads at the shoulder changes at the bottom. I also dislike machines with chains because they are awful to work with, get dirty and even stretch. The calf movement seems okay. I can see that the footprint and size is acceptable.

To maybe get back on topic, what do you iron warriors think of the Hammer Strength V Squat?

I use that VERY one and do 5 plates each side.  I believe my best was 5 plates and a 25 for a few reps.

I make sure to bottom it out.  I do find that it does not go low enough as when I do an Ass to Ground Squat and if I go Heavy, I will start to feel it on my knees precisely because it stops at parallel or just slightly below.

I do also like that you can vary the foot placement a bit for a different feeling and level of difficulty.

I get the worst kind of blood bruises on my traps and shoulders when I do this machine.  Looks pretty gross.

While I use some cable machines, I mainly use freeweights for my exercises rather than machines.  Freeweights make you use every single little muscle in your body indirectly to keep it balanced and stable when lifting giving you a much more through workout.

For me, machines are way too restrictive and honestly a good cage rack allows you to train with free weights while being safe as well.

So now you've changed your stance? Before you were arguing with me constantly how great machines were.
