Don't even get me started. I've been out all day and just found out. I knew he was sick, but hoped he stick around a bit longer. RIP RJD!

Very sad to hear this. One of a very few artists who actually define a genre. He was THE metal vocalist.

I've noticed guys here have posted some of his later work. This was the first song I ever heard with Dio on vocals. I was instantly a fan of this band.  Some cool Blackmore guitar intro, as well.

The only Rainbow stuff I really care for was when Dio was the vocalist. Tarot Woman is an awesome tune.

Yes, Joe Lynn Turner makes me sick, a stereotypical rock star poser.

Dio, on the other hand, was not trying to be anything but himself. That's why this holds up 33 years later.

This is very sad news...one of my favorites for over 25 years. And Coach, knowing what I know about Dio, he was never a Satan worshipper. His songs just had fantasy lyrics..but he was never into that. And definitely not your sex, drug, and rock and roll guy. He's been married to the same woman for years..liked sports..He was a decent guy and a great performer.

Oh, well — he wasn't going
to write Beethoven's Ninth Symphony anyway.

Back in the day I used to do close security (bounce) for two bands, Dio and Stryper, two bands totally opposite from one another, one who supposedly sole his sole to the devil (Dio) and the other Christian. Dio's dressing room was a sex infested drug and alcohol dungeon.

Fuck off and die a slow and painful death you ignorant SON OF A BITCH. If I was with you right this moment I would shove your cross so far up your ass.

RIP RONNIE JAMES PADAVONA. You were one of a kind and will be missed and remembered. One of the last true gentlemen in the music world.

Coach left out the fact that Stryper's dressing room was a sea of spandex clad, hairspray using, no-talent morons.

Just saw him in concert last year in San Francisco. Venue had been changed from the Shark Stadium in San Jose.

Great concert and great voice. Had no clue he was battling cancer. He toured and worked right up to the end of his days. Who of us will be able to say the same?

My favorites were always "Holy Diver, Rainbow in the Dark, and We Rock"

That was back when Vivian Campbell was shredding it up too...

Hey now! Stryper were no Thin Lizzy, but they weren't that bad. Michael Sweet has a great voice and the band was pretty tight. :)

Ronnie himself was known for eschewing drugs, holding a degree in pharmacology, and the claim of him being involved in anything satanic is idiotic and uninformed. He fired long time bassist Jimmy Bain in 89 for alcohol abuse and even sang on a gospel album in 1980. The friends I have who had known Ronnie would reiterate this as well.

Great article on Ronnie.

I have to agree with your sentiment here, especially as the coach is a drug user himself. Not to mention Stryper have no talent and should not be mentioned in the same breath as Dio.

Ronnie was one of the great ones.

A true legend.

RIP.

Yes, he was one of those people who could've composed the Beethovens 5th anyway.

I think it was the 9th ... but he was semi-responsible for this
