Boxing is cool, problem is you can find a karate place in every strip mall and most martial arts places are a few miles to get to.  Boxing clubs on the other hand are minimal.  The closest one is probably 30 minutes away.  It's tough to do after work.

If hes 7 yr old then wrestling for sure, if he wants to continue when older then Boxing and valetudo and he will become one badass kid lol

Assuming that you don't always meet the mike tysons, fedors and chuck norrises in the streets, Boxing should be enough. And i don't mean being a "weekend warrior", i mean training seriously 4 times a week.

Found out my nephew has signed up for Karate.  My brother says he wants his kid to toughen up and handle himself in school.  Now mind you he is only 7 years old.  I personally think Karate and TKD is no better than ballet.  It is all choreographed fighting.  I was telling him if he wants to have practical fighting skills that he can use to mess up bullies at school that he should take Jujitsu.

What do you guys think is the best thing to get him started in?

Judo,

Widely taught,

Realistic in using clothing/jacket to aid in throws.

BJJ is better for shirtless fights where you don't have clothing to grab - MMA competition

teach him how to use a gun usually stops any disagreement.

Been doing Aikido for 8 years. I would highly recommend it. It teaches you how to defend yourself against multiple attacks at a time. It is ENTIRELY defensive. If you want a cool offensive art, I would recommend Wing Chung (Kung Fu).. Ninjitsu is also a deadly art.

Entirely defensive = getting your ass handed to you.  And if you want to see how great wing chun is, watch the fight between the two "masters" Emin Botepe and the other guy.  It looks like two school kids rolling around.  Ninjitsu?!?!?!  Are you fucking serious?

The people that said wrestling, boxing, BJJ or judo are dead on.

BJJ traditionally is taught with a gi but many do train shirtless these days...

like I said look at that pic and imagine thats concrete or even grass for that matter the average person isnt getting up after that...more than likely a person who doesnt know how to fall is going to break something an arm, collar bone, ankle....I would still recommend some type of striking tothough to help him close the gap without getting his head knocked off

1. tyson n kimbo have already showed you how boxing skills match up against the avg street thug.

2.  already said.  jj masters are hard as nails, come from crashing poverty.  90% of street fights end up on ground.  you do the math.

3. wrestling - u guys been watching the ####in wwe too much.

the other stuff is mostly defensive.

i have an idea that the guys that start these thread have never been in a fight...just take the book sack off and throw hands with a b###h.  i wonder?

lets not even get to hand combat with wild animals again.  ::)

general street fights end up grappling and often on the ground b/c ppl dont know how to deal with someone standing that is clinched with them. If you know how to throw someone chances are its not going to get far enough to go to the ground unless you want it to.

the wrestling that myself and I believe others are referring to is olympic style wrestling not the wwe or whatever it is...you know on the ground...

again...i'm talking about kurt angle...as far as the wwe.  i've said i have no clue how his REAL skills convert in a street fight.

boxing - kimbo was trained in a gym.  look at his stance, tucked chin  and punch delivery in those vids.  he got exposed cause gannon a cop was trained in combat, the only guy he fought in miami with REAL training.  easy 2-3k per fight for him.

bjj - primary goal is to cut of blood circulation esp to the brain and THEY KNOW HOW TO FINISH.  i'll pass.

again...fun stuff....but i dont think some of these guys have every come home with a black eye, are just momma's boys.

sure they are good at throwing on ground etc.. problem is they are not good at finishing the fight like a bjj guy with choke, armbar etc..

Matarazzo was a boxer, but he couldn't beat a bypass...

That being said, I remember the story he beat up a guy that either broke into his or Flex's apt

judo does involve chokes and armbars...bjj has leg locks, knee bars, heel locks etc...that judo doesnt

but again the average person isnt going to get up after being planted on the ground so the fight is generally finished then and there also alot of competitive judo clubs cross train in bjj these days to help with ground work.
