Supposedly he became a vegetarian at 39, that is 1969 or so.

This pic is from 1965 I think



So he was already in prime shape before becoming a vegetarian.
He did win the 1971 NABBA Mr Universe and some other contests after that and he remained in amazing shape for his age. Here at 56:
