It never ceases to amaze me, the comments of people changing through time, as if people are stuck in a time warp of never aging, always being 250 lbs of muscle, dieted down in contest shape...LOL.

It happens people...we all age. some better than others.

BBers of all athletes, will seem to change the most, as were the most extreme in terms of a look thats processed through specific regimine...

I got news for all the defenders of youth here...I was your age once as well...

No one said you haven't aged gracefully, Chick. :)

We're just speculating about what happens to people no longer pretty* when their entire lives were dedicated to an industry is based upon looks.

A few household names got their money and moved on to bigger/better things or retired well. What about the journeymen who did show after show for little or no money?

* On the outside.

Well...the journeymen never really made any money from the sport anyway..so they always had to have some other sort of means of income... from the guys I run into over the years...it varries greatly, some started their own business, ran/ owned gyms, personal training, family business, some keep up with the sport, others not much at all....

If any of those pro's had any savvy they'd avoid bodybuilding at the start..

I wonder why so many former bodybuilders stayed disconnected with bodybuilding. You never see those guys around at none of the shows, i.e ASC, the Olympia and so on. it's as if they hate it. some of these guys have their own reasons, but I wonder if it's because it (BODYBUILDING) doesn't offer them anything else

I think many are bitter that they put themselves through all of that for *no* money.  Most of the guys who sacrificed so much were journeymen who went broke.  Very few made a profit.

Another reason:  Things have changed and BB has gotten even more fringe and "strange".  Frankly it just isn't something that some want to be associated with.

Then you may have folks who are embarrassed at what they look like now and know they would get roasted by folks who remember them in their glory days.

A lot of these guys have brains as well as brawn.

Kevin English has a degree in chemical engineering, Evan Centopani has an accounting degree, Kris Dim has a PHD in physics, Melvin Anthony has a high school diploma... etc.

90% of the pro's have a skill/education to fall back on.
HAHAHAHA. I hope this is all in jest. None of it is true.

It's called priorities, and they change drastically for most people...what was important at one point, suddenly is not. What once consumed 100%  of their efforts are now replaced with making a living, raising a family, taking care of parents, setting up for the future, etc...

Much like anything else in life, when you aren't a part of whats going on anymore, you simply lose interest, some more than others...the business world is a much different place, as is the working mans world...

In many other sports when they have a *big game* you see lots of the old timers or past heroes hanging out.  We're talking one weekend a year.  People like to get together, reminisce, and pay homage to the sport that gave them so much and that they were passionate for much of their lives.

Former football players, basketball players, and baseball players (just to name a few) still keep up with their respective sports because they have a passion for their game.  It made them who they were in life.

Many of the guys leave the "sport" of BB very bitter and angry about all they had to endure and really it was for nothing.  No lifetime pension, no finanical security, nothing but debt and health issues.

Now you can say I'm lying and try to paint a rose colored picture but I know what I've seen.

Your analogy makes no sense because bodybuilding isn't a sport.

you know for such an authority on what is and isn't a sport, it's odd how you are never seen in the sports forum

I don't really see much point in discussing them, especially on-line.

Also, I'm boycotting the Yankees thus year (for not resigning Matsui) and will only watch them play the RedSox if nothing else is on.

You'd probably know more than almost anyone here what lengths former greats will go to remain relevant to the industry and fans. Perhaps sharing some insights about your icon might give us a glimpse what goes on in their post pageant lives.

No need to paint anything but the truth...there are bitter/angry athletes in ALL sports...many more than you think.

As for what the BBers "had" to endure...it's what they CHOSE to pursue...no one had a gun or was forced to do anything...

We have the same ratio of old timers that show up at the Olympia every year, and sit around talking about the old days, and stories, etc...just like anyone else...many who credit BB with making them who they are today, and many which credit BB with the success they have today.

Shoot the messenger if you must, but the OP has posed a relevant and worthwhile question for a BB message board.  The truth is BB is a short ride; we all know about the ones who flame out in illness, death, jail (Francois, Muntzer, Titus, etc.), but BB stages are filled with guys who are still out there… somewhere… doing something.  What are they doing?  How are they doing?  Getting to the BB stage requires serious dedication and follow through.  Have some of these guys been able to execute their lives off stage as well?  Do they still train years later?  What do they look like now?  What kind of company do they keep?  Etc.  These and similar questions are behind the OP and it’s something people are interested in.

The OP also points out something that is too often forgotten by competitors or left unsaid: the industry is using them to make a lot of money—and paying them very little in return..  Why would a young wannabe sign up for this (ego? vanity?) and do they ever stop to think about how short the ride is and what they will do once it’s over?  Ego and vanity don't often lead to a secure future.

There are a lot of silly and, I would argue, unwelcome threads posted here but more than any other that I can easily recall this is one young competitors should be reading and thinking about. ::)

great post, I would love to see a list of where are they now, must be hundreds of names.

wonder what Trey Brewer is up to now???  It's sad to see young guys get built up so fast just to sell magazines and promote stuff, then get thrown out in the trash when they are done with them.
