I have seriously turned this piece of shit Apple Ipod on about 4 or 5 times.  It was an unwanted gift and never saw the need to even remove it from its box.  It still even remains in the plastic wrapper it came in.  I was just curious to see if I could put some Audio Books on there and the garbage won`t even come on.

Any suggestions besides toggling the Hold Button and holding the middle and Menu buttons down?  Apple really makes garbage products if this thing won`t even turn on.  Considering I even have an antique Victrola over 115 years old that sounds as new as the day the wood was first polished.

Apple Fail.

ROFLMAO,

On a few Apple Forums they say to throw it down a few times on a carpeted surface of gently bang on it.  They are dead serious.  Does Apple REALLY make products this shitty?  This is how people used to fix televisions in the 60s, Bang on the sides. HA HA HA

Besides replacing battery (which is super cheap and easy to do yourself)....no clue.

How old is it, and how long have you goeb without using it? And have you banged it up, what is the conditioning? Or just go to a Apple Store.

I like my Shuffle but the headphones are useless.  If you get it going you'll want some isolation phones that don't fall out of your ears when you're moving around.  Great for audio books.  I have beat the hell out of it and covered it in grime of all sorts.  The models that are too big to clip on you collar look like they'd be a pain in the ass tho.

They make pretty sturdy products imo.  Both of my ipods have gone through the wash before and still work fine - just put them outside for a day or so in a zip lock bag with some of those moisture absorbers from vitamin bottles, then recharge it and you're good to go.

you should know better than to take one incident and paint a negative picture about a company based on that one thing. You could always go back to a walkman or something

This is paradox of rechargeable batteries.  Each one has a predetermined charge cycle.   That is to say, it can be used, drained, and recharged a set number of times (say 1000 times).  After that, the battery will no longer effectively hold a charge.

But if you use, drain, and recharge the battery only a handful of times and then set it aside for say, one year, and then try to recharge it again you’ll find that it no longer works—at all.  Rechargeable batteries are meant to be used in the short term--they are not intended to sit on a shelf for months or years without being used.  That’s what you did with your iPod battery and that is why it no longer works.  Your iPod is fine, but the rechargeable battery is dead.  If you want to use it, replace the rechargeable battery and then use the product consistently, charging and discharging the battery at very regular intervals.  If you are not going to use it for a while leave it connected to a power source so it is always charged.

Leaving a battery on the shelf for months (after it has been charged) will prematurely kill the battery's life cycle.

No, they don't.  One of the big selling points of Apple is that their stuff works the way it's supposed to.  This is probably an outlier, or someone knowingly re-gifted you a dud.

I think that's the case with Nickle Cadmium.  Lithium batteries can be recharged deep, shallow, used heavy, light or not at all, and they will fail at the same date no matter what.  So I've been told.

Lithium batteries are relatively new to consumer goods and there have been issues.  I've had an 18v and a 14v Makita battery conk out within weeks of purchase while others keep going strong.  I heard of a laptop recall because the batteries were bursting into flame.

TA, go to the store and have them try another battery.  While you're there, consider one of the mini Ipod Shuffles.  They're very cheap and better for someone active since, as I said, you can clip it to your collar instead of further from your head with a wire flopping all over the place when you move.  Hopefully they'll have my older model which lets you control the volume on the Ipod instead of the earphones, because you won't want to use their phones.  I have one of the lower priced Shure phones and am pretty happy with them, although it took some screwing around with the rubber earpieces to find a good fit.

Which Model is it?Does it come on when plugged in to your computer? If its not a dead battery then a firmware reflash should sort it.

I was going to buy a new one and then I figured why waste the money when the one I have still works.

Now it will probably break tomorrow.

I heard a bag of rice works best for absorbing the moisture, but have not tried it. As far as Ipods go, I had an older one, and thought it was so so. My favorite MP3 players have been my Sanaas(sp) , especially the clips, but they don't hold enough. Using a Sony now and its ok but making playlists is a pain.

Thanks for all the responses.  I am going to give them another chance and see what can be done with this thing.  An apple flashed on the screen a few times and then went blank.  There seems to be power to it as I also have an FM transmitter which came with it (for playing digital media on any radio) and that has a power indicator light which glares bright red so that leads me to believe that there is in fact power.

Any tricks I should know about if power is present?   This thing really is brand new.

Bright red is an indication of LOW battery  ;D

• Make sure you have the latest version of iTunes (download the new version if necessary)

• When the device is plugged into the power cord and connected to your computer, open iTunes and select the option to Restore the ipod to its factory settings

• update the iPod software so that you have the latest version (this is different from updating to the latest version of iTunes)

If none of this works, I would take it to an Apple store for service.

TA, take it to your nearest Apple store and tell them the problem. I've had a need to go there with my laptop a couple of times and in all cases my problem was just a matter of pushing the wrong 'button' or my failure to know how to do something properly.

Your iPod sounds like it has a more serious problem, but they'll give you an immediate answer and most likely fix it for you then and there with no charge.

In my opinion Apple service is one of the best and the employees are real computer fans who are alway happy to help with any problems.
