Michelle Obama on Valentine’s Day Gift-Giving: “Jewelry Always”
ABC News ^ | February 9, 2011 | Sunlen Miller

________________________ ______________________

What does First Lady Michelle Obama want for Valentine’s Day?

“Jewelry always,” Mrs. Obama said, “you can’t go wrong.”

During an interview with Live With Regis and Kelly the First Lady joked that she hoped her husband was watching her on TV so he’d get a few hints for Valentine’s Day on Monday.

Mrs. Obama said that her husband is “very romantic” though and remembers dates for special occasions even when she thinks he’s forgotten and she starts to “get a little attitude” with him.

“You gotta keep the romance alive, even in the White House,” she added.

Michelle Obama Goes Skiing in Colorado
by Keith Koffler on February 19, 2011, 11:34 am

http://www.whitehousedossier.com/2011/02/19/michelle-obama-skiing-colorado

First Lady Michelle Obama is on “a private family trip” in Colorado where she is skiing with daughters Sasha and Malia, according to an administration official.

“The First Lady and several close friends are  chaperoning their children on a ski trip,” the official told the press pool reporter who is following President Obama today.

Reports coming out of Colorado say she arrived Friday night and is staying at the Sebastian Hotel on Vail Mountain. Rooms start at $605 per night for a room with two queen beds and head north of $2,000 for multi-bedroom suites.

Here’s a description from the hotel’s website:

For the best in Colorado vacations, stay at The Sebastian - Vail and enjoy Vail’s newest boutiqueslopeside hotel. In the heart of the Vail Village, The Sebastian is welcoming and pulsing with life. There’s Bloom Spa, Frost Bar, Market for nibbles, our visionary Block 16 restaurant. There’s a mountain-view pool, hot tubs and a roaring fire pit. Base Camp offers ski-in ski-out access from Vail’s Vista Bahn lift, just at the foot of Vail Mountain. Our ski valets will help you into warm ski boots and out onto the mountain.

Mrs. Obama has decided to jet out to Vail – instead of visiting slopes closer to Washington DC in Virginia or Pennsylvania – despite already incurring criticism for taking opulent excursions, particularly a trip last summer to Spain. There, she stayed at the country’s swankest hotel and, like this weekend, was traveling without her husband.

Mrs. Obama also raised eyebrows in December when she left earlier than President Obama for their annual vacation in Hawaii, incurring added expenses for taxpayers that likely ran well in excess of $100,000.

The trip to Vail, which almost certainly requires use of a large Air Force jet, would likely be much more expensive for taxpayers than a shorter journey by chopper or motorcade to a resort near Washington. Mrs. Obama will likely pay for a portion of her trip, but many costs of a first lady’s travel are borne by taxpayers.

President Obama today went to serve as the “parent coach” for for Sasha’s basketball team, even though Sasha was not there.

Meanwhile, Vice President Biden and his wife are spending the weekend in Key Largo.

VAIL, Colorado — First lady Michelle Obama is among the Presidents Day weekend crowd.

Obama arrived Friday night for a weekend of skiing in Vail and Beaver Creek, according to local sources.

A motorcade of about a dozen vehicles, including 15 state and local law enforcement officers, traveled from the Eagle County Regional Airport to Vail on Friday night, according to the Colorado State Patrol. Roads were temporarily blocked to make way for the motorcade in Eagle.

The motorcade entered an underground garage beneath the Sebastian hotel in Vail Village shortly after 9:30 p.m.

No stranger to the slopes

It won't be the first lady's first time on skis. She took daughters Sasha and Malia for a quick trip to Liberty Mountain Resort, in Carroll Valley, Pa., in February 2010. It was the first time on skis for the first daughters, according to Anne Weimer, marketing director at Ski Liberty.

During an interview posted by Liberty Mountain, the first lady was asked about some her favorite hot spots. Instead, she talked about a cool spot.

“We discovered skiing. My girls had never been skiing,” she said. “With a couple hours, you're skiing.”

Ski Liberty is 60 minutes from the White House.

“You can go from 60- and 50-degree weather to being on a slope. Not too many places in this country you can do that and still be at the seat of power. It's kind of cool,” she said in the interview.

Obama has made health and fitness one of her primary causes, and skiing burns up to 400 calories an hour, ski-industry sources say.

Meanwhile, Vice President Joe Biden is spending the Presidents Day holiday weekend in the Florida Keys.

The White House says Biden and his wife traveled to Key Largo on Thursday night. The couple will remain in the Upper Keys through Monday.

No public events are scheduled for the first lady's visit to Vail.

Michelle Obama's big 'sacrifces' on her Vail vacation
American Thinker ^ | 2/21/11 | Jeannie DeAngelis

It has been almost a month and a half since the Obama family returned from 10 days in Oahu. With all the breastfeeding advice she's been giving out lately, an exhausted First Lady is long overdue for some R & R.

Relinquishing her role as tireless workaholic, Michelle decided to revisit last year's mother/daughter ski trip to the Ski Liberty Resort in Carroll Valley, Pennsylvania. Only this year, the Obama women have taken to the slopes in Vail, Colorado on a "private family trip" accompanied by "several close friends."

When unveiling his budget, Michelle's husband reminded Americans, "Everybody's going to have to give a little bit." The President even suggested: "If you're a family trying to cut back, you might skip going out to dinner, you might put off a vacation."

According to Obama, "Just like every family in America, the federal government has to ... live within its means." Which is exactly what Mrs. Obama is doing, spending time with her daughters at a resort that is much more modest than she's used to.

Actually, the whole excursion to Vail Mountain is one of self-sacrifice. According to administration officials, the First Lady and friends are merely "chaperoning...children on a ski trip," otherwise Michelle would likely be home hunkered down, tirelessly working in the "Let's Move" office of the White House.

On a tight budget, the ski trip is but a few steps above a school-sponsored field trip. The chaperones are staying at the Sebastian Hotel, where lodging starts at "$605 per night ... and head north of $2,000 for multi-bedroom suites." Those rates are certainly more modest than the $6,600 a night Mrs. Obama was rumored to have spent at the Hotel Villa Padierna in Costa del Sol.

The Sebastian touts "spas, a Frost Bar, a Market for nibbles, a mountain-view pool, hot tubs and a fire pit." A bevy of ski valets assist patrons "into warm boots and out onto the mountain," which is just the kind of pared-down amenity that penny-pinchers across America can easily relate to.

Michelle arrived with "A motorcade of about a dozen vehicles, including 15 state and local law enforcement officers, traveled from the Eagle County Regional Airport to Vail...Roads were temporarily blocked to make way for the motorcade."

Despite the extravagant entourage, when it comes to frugality Mrs. Obama is a pro. A flight from DC to Colorado is 1,700 miles and takes approximately 3 hours. Although the First Lady usually employs a large Air Force jet to ferry her from vacation spot to vacation spot, this time she answered the call to live within the Obama family means in the following way: To save money, instead of Air Force One, which costs about $100,000 per hour to fly, Michelle chose a less expensive jet.

Not including the weight of ski equipment, a fair guesstimation would be that the Michelle Vail Vacation one-way flight cost much less than what would otherwise have set the American taxpayer back $300,000.

Moreover, Michelle's savvy decision to travel as often as possible without Barack also eliminates about 180 pounds of excess baggage weight, and in the long run helps in tamping down overall costs.

As an added budgetary bonus, the President joined Michelle in setting an example of prudence. Barry saved coaching fees for Sasha's basketball team when another coach failed to show up. Although Sasha was on the bunny slope with Mom in Vail, our thrifty President paused stirring up union trouble in Wisconsin long enough to serve America as a "parent coach" for a team of nine year-old girls, and selflessly did it for free.

Michelle Obama Sports a $1,000 Handbag
by Keith Koffler on March 10, 2011, 9:22 am

www.drudgereport.com

Well heavens!

Mrs. Obama was gaining a lot of traction as the fashion icon for the everywoman when all of a sudden she  stepped out of the Michellemobile – reportedly Monday – grasping a $1,000 tote bag.

Take a look-see!

Yeah baaaaby!

It’s a Reed Krakoff two-tone ribboned large tote, and you can get it at Mr. Krakoff’s website for $990, plus shipping I guess. But we don’t worry about shipping. Fedex it, in fact.

No wait a second, you can’t get it, because it’s already sold out, at least in the teal color she got.

Love it with the blue slippers, BTW. It just WORKS, okay?

I don’t know, go ahead Mrs. Obama, tote around anything you want. If you’ve got spare the cash, be my guest. C’mon now, what’s she supposed to walk around with, a plastic shopping bag from the Giant?

Just, please – please please please please please – don’t put on any more cheapskate clothes and allow press coverage anointing you the Fashionista of Affordability.

A year ago Mrs. Obama appeared on the Today show in a $35 dress. You would have thought she eliminated poverty in Bombay.

Rina Raphael, writing for the Today Show, was barely able to control herself.

Just how approachable is the first lady’s style? Michelle Obama once again made her mark as ambassador for affordable fashion when she appeared Wednesday on TODAY in a $34.95 H&M polka-dot frock from the Swedish clothing company’s current collection.

Known for her fun, casual style, Michelle accessorized her dress with a red leather belt and bright yellow shoes — an ensemble that had fashionistas and fans alike praising her coordination. When questioned by TODAY’s Matt Lauer about  being called a fashion icon, the first lady responded that while’s she complimented, it’s not something she prefers to give too much attention to.

“Everybody’s got to get dressed in the morning and put on something,” she said. “I hope people find it nice, but it’s not something I focus on.”

The first lady made waves in the past by choosing outfits from popular retail companies. In 2008,  she wore a $148 black-and-white, high-waisted print dress designed by Ricco — sold at White House, Black Market — on “The View.”

Yeah, you know, because you gotta throw something on in the morning. Everyone has to get dressed, right?

A big Reed Krakoff thank you to White House Dossier reader Granny Jan, who first alerted me to this and who blogs at Granny Jan and Jihad Kitty.

And for those who can’t afford such a bag during these times – or other times – you can Do the Hopey Copey.

sorry - I would not pay more than $15 for that bag at a flea market.   If she has such poor judgment and her husband as well, aw to where their income goes, extrapolate that out to the nation and you will understand why their ecomonic policies are failsville 24/7.

Shit - even this head scarf probably did not cost that much.

At least I am honest and up front about it.

Nothing would make me happier than some nerdy Jewish CPA showing up to the WH like in Rocky 5 and tell obama and his fat pig wife that they are broke and will be in debt forever due to thir lavish spending and them having to move back into the equivalent of Mother Cabrini houses in Chi Town.

I personally would fly out to Chi town rent the U-Haul, drive it to DC - pack up their shit  - and deliver i to the housing project in Chi Town.

As for that purse she paid a g for, damn, what a waste when she could be feeding poor kids in chicago where her husbands community agitation had no posítive impact.
