Michelle Obama: Red Lobster and Olive Garden Cutting Calories!
Brian Koenig ^ | 9/15/11 | Brian Koenig Red Lobster, Olive Garden, and its sister chains are pursuing a "breakthrough moment" in the restaurant industry, that is, according to Michelle Obama. To Americans who actually like eating food, not so much.
(Associated Press) - Darden Restaurants Inc. is pledging to cut calories and sodium in its meals by 20 percent over a decade. Among promised changes for children, a fruit or vegetable side and low-fat milk will become standard with kids' meals unless a substitution is requested.
No more French fries for the little ones unless an adult asks for them.
"With this new commitment, Darden is doing what no restaurant company has done before," said the first lady, who joined executives of Orlando, Fla.-based Darden for the announcement at an Olive Garden restaurant in Maryland, just outside Washington.
... The kids' menu changes are scheduled to take effect next July at Darden's 1,900 restaurants in 49 states. Its other brands are LongHorn Steakhouse, The Capital Grille, Bahama Breeze and Seasons 52. The Capital Grille and Seasons 52 do not have children's menus.
Sorry kids.
"This is a breakthrough moment in the restaurant industry. I believe the changes that Darden will make could impact the health and well-being of an entire generation of young people," Michelle said, as she championed her "War Against Childhood Obesity Part 15." Side note: Part 14 was her butt shakin moment to a Beyonce tune.
The problem is, Mrs. Obama is full of crap. She is a dining diva, hopping from one thrifty, not-so-healthy restaurant to the next. Remember earlier this summer when she visited the Shake Shack in Washington D.C., where she ordered a ShackBurger, fries, a chocolate shake, and a Diet Coke - a 1,556-calorie feast that would make the Lord's Supper look healthy?
If Mrs. Obama gets any award, she will go down in history as the biggest calorie counting scam artist in the history of U.S. First Ladies.
