I idolized Bob Paris as a high school kid.  I knew I was never gonna be a Lee Haney nor a Rich Gaspari..... so I emulated Paris.  I found out later he was gay and i didn't give a shit.... he was everything Bodybuilding was meant to be....

I even copied his hair style and white trunks when i was 18.......

Exactly - who gives a shit if he's gay or not - Paris had a perfect physique. He was always the epitome of bodybuilding for me.

Surprisingly enough, I did see once, a comparison between him, Benfatto and Labrada - the three 'classic physiques' - and Labrada looked the most symmetrical of them all.

Lol its pretty sad were reliant on a gay man to tell us how awful these guys were starting to look and its the truth. Than again I have no interest in BBing. ::)

Interesting, can you explain that? Are gay men somehow unreliable?

Bob Paris is probably the best looking professional bodybuilder there has, dare I say, ever been.  Alongside Bob, Steeve Reeves was another amazing specimen of a man.

Also, I think Bob Paris made for an excellent representative of the "sport".  Just by listening in on that interview he gave by poolside regarding steroid abuse, can any of you honestly say there is another bodybuilder, past or present, as eloquent and as classy in his overall delivery of a message?

Frankly, the size Paris displayed in 84/88 is probably as big as a man should ever get, pro bodybuilding included.  Anything bigger than what Paris displayed in 88 is not just lacking any aesthetic value to it, but just downright looks strange.  Paris looked amazing without clothes, with regular clothes on and while wearing a suit.  Did any of you consider how pathetic these former Mr. Olympias looked during the Olympia show when they had to wear suits for the past champions presentation roundup?

Too bad this "sport" has forgotten what the true meaning of bodybuilding was meant to be, professional bodybuilders rely too heavily on the amount of drugs they inject versus the amount of weight they push or food they consume.

X10 !!!!!

Sadiqui, I also think Bob Chick would agree with my post if he were to be reading this thread.  Old Bobby is actually a classic looking bodybuilder himself, who due to the industry's "bigger is better" bullshit has had to sacrifice his great lines to play with the big boys.

This "sport" will never, I repeat, never be taken seriously so as long as its showcase competitors all look like a bunch of circus sideshow acts seeping of steroids.

The top pros of today can't even wear normal clothes, because they look pathetic.  With the exception of Chick, the vast majority of pros sound like fucking morons, barely able to put a sentence together without the mandatory "youknowwhadamean" or "uhh" in between each word or thought. Add to that the fact that pretty much all women are repulsed by their look and what do you have?

Answer: Freaks that cater to dirty, old, gay men using their pictures as stroking material.

Well said..and agreed

One thing I was never willing to do, was go that route...I never wanted to go to 300 and put my health at any more risk than I already was in the brutal dehydration process....

I'm glad you never did. You managed to keep just the right size needed to be able to market yourself across the bodybuilding spectrum.

One thing I will say is that I hope the judges and/or heads of AMi/FLEX marketing start to realize that less is more and that keeping to that of a Bob Paris "look" is probably the best way to bring the "sport" to the masses without appearing like fucking freaks.

Anyone remember Ronnie Coleman on Jay Leno? What the fuck!?!

Well this was disappointing!!!  I finally finished Bob Paris' book, and believe it or not there are two pages missing!!!  No they were not ripped out, there's definitely a printing error.  I checked online and the book is 275 pages, my book (a hard cover), stops abruptly at p. 273 and that page is printed on the inside of the back cover!!!  WTF!!!

Now I gotta find a way to get those last two pages!!!

so basically you, as the athletes representative, are in agreement with OneMoreRep's statement that "the vast majority of pros sound like fucking morons, barely able to put a sentence together without the mandatory "youknowwhadamean" or "uhh" in between each word or thought."

Paris had an amazing physique. Not the kind of physique to win the 'O but a true classic physique. he was handsome and had he been heterosexual, he would have been a pussy pulling machine as he was also articulate. But it seems nature has the way to exclude both the low and higher ends. The competition has to go on for individuals to reproduce so specimens like Paris go gay so that normal human beings can compete for pussy.

Grant had the potential to be on par or possibly even better than Paris when I first met him. I think that was shortly after Everson did an article or was in the process of writing his story in Planet Muscle.

Why did you give it up, Grant? And have you ever regretted it?

Have you given any consideration to getting back into competitive shape and WINNING the masters? You'd definitely dominate that class and restart a new career.

I only got 274 on my book.

continue up this mountain, I will hate some things about it, there'll be ethical dilemmas and the going won't always be smooth. I accept that. The thing that I wrapped my hopes and dreams around for so long has its dark side, but I've never known any field of endeavor that didn't.

I can move on to other things, other goals. I can even call them greener pastures. I can try and forget the past and say that part of my life is now a closed chapter, but in spite of all the aspects about this thing that bothered me , I can't escape what it did for my life.

During the past few years I successfully branched my life and career out into all sorts of new areas, and I could blow my own horn with a long list of accomplishments, but doing that would serve no purpose, other than naked self-promotion. That's not why I raise the point. I mention it for two reasons, First, my time in the sport of bodybuilding taught me I was capable of doing almost anything I set my mind and my disciplined efforts to. Second, and I think more importantly, in spite of achieving success in other aspects of my work life, not one of these accomplishments can even come close to the feeling I had when I heard emcees announce my name as a national and a world champion in my sport. To some people that will sound like an incredibly stupid statement, but to anyone who has ever been-or has ever imagined being-in a similar situation, it will make perfect sense.
