Results of my push/pull powerlifting contest.
« on: October 11, 2010, 02:34:06 AM »
The contest went exactly as I predicted in this post:

http://www.getbig.com/boards/index.php?topic=350551.msg4938784#msg4938784

Quote
I hate to say it, but I'm really not prepared for my contest on Saturday.  I think I will open with 425 for deadlift and 295 for bench.  If I get those lifts I will maybe go 435 and 300 and depending on how those go I will decide what to do for my last attempts.

I got 430 and 295, which was not bad considering I basically took September off from training.

My body weight was 165 in light clothes.  I was the lightest in the contest.

You have to hand it to me for one thing - I don't lie about my strength claims.  I like getbig for a lot of reasons but I do find that people are not totally honest about their claims.  The way I see it, be honest or just say nothing.  I am honest about my claims and have posted videos of most of my best lifts.

I can think of maybe 10-15 people in my city who can deadlift 500 or more.  So many people claim to be able to on the boards but I never see these people anywhere that I train.  Likewise, there are maybe 10-15 people who can bench press over 300.  Granted there are a few more who hover around the 300 mark as I do currently, but I can't think of 10 who would have been able to beat my personal best from around 18 months ago which was 345.  As much as people claim to be able to do that, I pretty well never see it.

295 Bench [looks spotter assisted but look carefully and you will see it's not]:

430 deadlift:

I admit that on the deadlift I felt my form was off but I had no idea to what extent until I saw the video.  I have been taking videos of my deadlifts for months now to improve my form and my form for deadlift is typically pretty good and when it isn't I can usually tell.  I had no idea how rounded my back was until watching the video.  But either way, I locked it out for a hard single and I was happy.

MUTANT MASS and MUTANT PRO were given as prizes at the contest.  ;D

Here are videos of the overall winner of the contest, Dallas Hogan.  He is currently Ontario's 6th strongest man and was Ontario's 4th strongest man in 2008.

Bench Press - 460:

Deadlift - 775 [a personal record for Dallas]:

And no, Matt T did not pay me to plug MUTANT MASS.  ;D

Granted, I've never trained at a "hardcore" gym, but I can count the number of people I've seen bench 3 plates on one hand (and I'm not one of them).

nzmusclemonster, would you say that bodybuilding has gay undertones?  ??? [Please view the picture attached before answering this question]

There were two guys at the contest who were under 175 who deadlifted over 500.  On the boards I always hear guys claiming to be that weight say they have a 500+ deadlift, but only two did.  The others who deadlifted over 500 were huge and on gear.

Exactly.

You know it's funny, when I was younger I would always stop and watch anyone bench pressing say over 275 or deadlifting over 365.  For the past year I was basically doing that every workout and I was looking over a lot of my videos and I would often catch people in the gym watching me do the lift.  I then realized that basically every time I train I have onlookers.  I was oblivious to this because when I'm trying to do a heavy set I don't pay attention to the people around me.  Why would people watch?  Because those lifts are rare, at least where I am.  I can't speak for every person on here, but I can state that after witnessing/participating in the local powerlifting/strongman scene for a few years now, people who bench over three plates and deadlift over five plates are very rare.

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!

A dude at one of the local gyms was doing that to patrons and got banned!

I`ve deadlifted over 500 lbs. (600 at a fat, fat fucking 240 lbs)  I think my bodyweight has to be around 185 for me to do so.  At least thats the lowest I have been to deadlift 500.  Perhaps with some extra training and attention I could get 500 at a lower bodyweight as I haven`t tried.  But for now, if I am 185 plus in bodyweight I can do 500.

At my gym it was always the deadlift that people turned to look at. I don't think anyone knew how much was on the bar exactly, but if it looked like it was near 500 lbs then people started to watch. I went to the gym with my dad for the first year or so. He benched 330 pounds and weighted 265 pounds himself. For a long time I thought that was some sort of pinnacle of strength, and had that as my distant goal for years.

I used to think I was strong untill I started training at Westside Barbell. Then you quickly realise you are not very strong at all.In the morning crew on friday there are two guys who squat 1100 or more, one at 1050 another at 1025.It goes on and on from  there. In fact ,the lowest squat is an 810 from a 185 lb guy.Thats the smallest squat in the crew.

Hey dude, good lifts.  What kind of show was that though-that wasn't a pause bench and there weren't any lights or judges, from what I saw.  Just wondering..

Good lifts Matt,big props!!

Where did you place in the meet?

Hey thanks Tim!!  I placed 3rd for bench, 4th for deadlift in the under 200 class [although technically, only the top three placed].  I was 2nd/4th last time and as I said in that other post, I was not prepared for this contest mainly because I was preparing to cover the Olympia for most of September.  With that said, the contest truly went as well or better than I expected to.  At the time of the last contest I was doing 315X2 at 170 but declined a bit since then.

Also, at 165 I would say that in addition to the above two lifts, I would be good for at least a 325 squat.  I think that all in all I am at a very good starting point to get back into bodybuilding.  I gave it some thought and while there are health benefits to being lighter, I kind of miss being bulked up at say 180-190 and I think it will also help my lifts to be honest.  But when my arms shrunk to 15" when they were at one point over 16.5", it really made me want to go back into bodybuilding.  Also, going to the 2010 Olympia was inspiring.

Matt, i take it you're not the tallets guy around? 180-190lbs bulked up isn't exactly bulked up unless you're maybe 5'6" or less.

Not flaming you btw. Good lifts at that weight. You'd outbench me right now and i outweigh you by 70lbs

Matt C, if first prize was to felate the biggest cock in Thunder Bay, rest assured that NZassrimmer would have flown out from Dunedin with his tape measure, placed last, despite the fact that only he and BayBGM competed, yet still somehow manage to felate the 10 biggest cocks in town.

Impressive lifts.

Very interesting.  I remember seeing your deadlift photos on here before, very impressive.  I have never lifted above 460 on the deadlift although I think with extra body [180-190] I will end up around 475-500.  I would like it to be on the higher end of that but I'm not sure how realistic that is and I want good form if I'm doing a heavy single like that.  But I do think that as body weight rises, deadlift 1RM strength will too as you said.

Matt, i take it you're not the tallets guy around? 180-190lbs bulked up isn't exactly bulked up unless you're maybe 5'6" or less.

You're right, 180-190 is by no means huge at my height.  I am 5'8-5'9 depending on the time of day [I wake up in the morning a little over 5'9 but we all lose height as the day progresses].  At 160, my heart rate is around 60, but it goes up as my body weight goes up.  I want to be muscular but I do want to be healthy as well and I'm not sure how easy it would be for my body to be 200+ when I have been used to being thin my entire life.  Health and sustainability are important to me.  180-190 puts me at sort of a Mark Wahlberg build, which I think is not too bad.

Matt C, if first price was to felate the biggest cock in Thunder Bay, rest assured that NZassrimmer would have flown out from Dunedin with his tape measure, placed last, despite the fact that only he and BayBGM competed, yet still somehow manage to felate the 10 biggest cocks in town.

Absolutely everybody over the internet bullshits about their lifts.

You even have NFL players doing 700lb bench presses with three "spotters/assistant" lifters claiming clean lift...

Good lifts Matt.

Also 190 is pretty decent size for a natty, especially at that height. If lean it's great size.

Cheers to you competing in a meet, but god damn that was the worst deadlift form I have ever seen.
