Obama’s trip to India has a carbon footprint bigger than many US cities

The Daily Mail: Forty planes and six armoured cars: Obama visit to India the ‘biggest ever by a US President’

NDTV: US to spend $200 million a day on Obama’s Mumbai visit

About 3,000 people, including Secret Service agents, US government officials and journalists, are accompanying the president on his trip to India. Several officials from the White House and US security agencies have been there for the past week with helicopters, a ship and high-end security instruments.

Of course, we know that US presidents don’t travel lightly, and they need security details and armored cars. But 3,000 people and forty aircraft?

Let’s do the carbon math:

Estimate of the carbon footprint of President Obama’s trip to India

We are constantly told how bad air travel is for the planet. For example, the UK has a whole organization, called “Plane Stupid,” dedicated to the issue. It is groups like this that enable us to calculate the carbon emissions of air travel using the handy dandy Terrapass web page.

1. If one assumes that all 3,000 people fly commercial from Washington, D.C., to New Delhi and back (and nowhere else), their cumulative carbon footprint can be calculated according to Terrapass at http://www.terrapass.com/carbon-footprint-calculator/#air.

Here’s the info on their calculation methodology.

So here’s what we get for the maximum number of people, ten, that we can select at one time on that website. Note that Bombay, India is now called Mumbai, but the airport code is still BOM in Terrapass:

Multiply 62,238 lbs of CO2 for ten people times 300 (to make three thousand) and we get 18,671,400 lbs of CO2, or 8,469 metric tons.

To get the per capita figure in metric tons, divide that again by 3,000 people, which gives us 2.823 metric tons per person for the trip.

2. The Brookings Institute did a survey in 2008 ranking major US cities by their per capita emissions. You can read the full report here. If we were to compare his trip to the city table:

Obama’s trip comes in between Memphis and Raleigh on a per capita basis.

3. Caveat: Of course, this calculation excludes the carbon footprint for also traveling to Indonesia, South Korea and Indonesia as part of this Grand Tour, as well as any other activity while in those places. Plus vehicles and other forms of travel.

If we figured in all the travel, it would well be higher.

The message? Travel lightly but carry a big hockey stick.

4. If Obama wanted to offset the carbon using the tool of choice of his buddy, Al Gore, the Chicago Climate Exchange, he could do so pretty cheaply since carbon offsets there are selling for five cents per metric ton.

So with 8,469 metric tons of CO2 emitted for the Washington-to-Bombay roundtrip, he could buy a carbon indulgence for a mere $423.45. That’s chump change when you are blowing a cool $200 million per day to keep everybody traveling in style.

Obama’s India extravaganza angers Americans

________________________ ________________________ ___

The US is still crawling through a recession and its citizens are bothered that their chief is squandering huge resources over a vacation

There's a groundswell of anger in the US over the high cost of Barack Obama's trip to India this weekend. The sentiment stems from reports that the president and his entourage of about 3,000 officials, business people and security personnel will spend an estimated $200 million a day when he visits India for four days, beginning Saturday.

Topping the list of critics is newly-elected Republican representative from Minnesota Michele Bachmann, who has called the cost of the upcoming presidential trip "over-the-top". In an interview to a television channel following her victory in a hotly-contested re-election bid, she said, "We have never seen this sort of an entourage going with the president before. And I think this is an example of the massive overspending that we've seen-not just in the last two years, really in the last four."

There has been no independent confirmation of the expenditure figures, but the White House has been quick to respond, saying that the figures cited have no basis in reality. "Due to security concerns, we are unable to outline details associated with security procedures and costs, but it's safe to say these numbers are wildly inflated," White House spokespersons Amy Brundage said in a statement.

Still, it's difficult to believe that the elaborate arrangements for the four-day visit will come cheap. Like a bomb-proof surface tunnel that is to be installed by US military engineers on the approach to Mani Bhavan, the Gandhi museum that the president will visit soon after he comes to Mumbai on Saturday. US security officials came up with the plan after inspecting the route to the museum and they felt that the area was too congested to monitor. The kilometer-long tunnel that will be large enough to let Obama's cavalcade drive through, will be put up in an hour.

Several officials from the White House and US security agencies have been in India for the past couple of weeks with helicopters, a ship and high-end security systems, preparing for the visit. While security is a major concern, Americans aren't convinced about the costs involved.

"Some people say that Obama does not get it. I say he gets it just fine. He just does not care. He has his pie and he will eat it with all the toppings he can get on it and to heck with anyone else," writes one reader responding to the report on the cost of the trip. "This man has had more vacations in his two years in office than I have had in my entire life. He does not care that US citizens are living in tents as long as he is not."

Another American who wrote after returning from voting, said: "I'm totally speechless when it comes to Obama and his clowns and the whole political mess. I can't express my anger and resentment anymore."

At $200 million a day for the four-day stay, the total expenditure might not be anywhere near $1 billion, perhaps a lot less. But with a large section of Americans struggling without jobs and even losing their houses in the recession that was set off by the financial crisis in 2008, that is still too much for them to digest.

India is preparing for Barack Obama's first visit to the country by removing coconuts from palm trees in Mumbai to protect the US president.

Published: 7:00AM GMT 04 Nov 2010

Mr Obama will visit India, Indonesia, South Korea, Japan and China on the 10-day tour. Photo: WHITE HOUSE Mr Obama will arrive in India on Saturday for the first leg of an Asian tour.

But as well as the usual security measures that come with welcoming a a visiting dignitary, Indian authorities have decided to go one step further, by removing all natural threats to the president as well.

Obama's visit to India underlines its economic power and rivalry to ChinaAll coconuts around the city's Gandhi museum, one of Mr Obama's stops in the city, are being taken down.

Mani Bhavan, where Mahatma Gandhi stayed during his freedom struggle against the British, is among five places the US president is visiting in Mumbai.

"We told the authorities to remove the dry coconuts from trees near the building. Why take a chance?" Mani Bhavan's executive secretary, Meghshyam Ajgaonkar, told the BBC.

Last week American security officers inspected Mani Bhavan and its surroundings along with other places the president is likely to visit.

Every year in India people are injured or even killed by falling coconuts.

Mr Obama, still smarting from heavy losses in the midterm elections, will visit India, Indonesia, South Korea, Japan and China on the 10-day tour.

34 warships sent from US for Obama visit
Press Trust of India, Updated: November 04, 2010 19:04 IST

________________________ ________________________ ______________________

New Delhi:  The White House will, of course, stay in Washington but the heart of the famous building will move to India when President Barack Obama lands in Mumbai on Saturday.

Communications set-up, nuclear button, a fleet of limousines and majority of the White House staff will be in India accompanying the President on this three-day visit that will cover Mumbai and Delhi.

He will also be protected by a fleet of 34 warships, including an aircraft carrier, which will patrol the sea lanes off the Mumbai coast during his two-day stay there beginning Saturday. The measure has been taken as Mumbai attack in 2008 took place from the sea.

Arrangements have been put in place for emergency evacuation, if needed.

Obama is expected to fly by a helicopter -- Marine One -- from the city airport to the Indian Navy's helibase INS Shikra at Colaba in south Mumbai.

From there, he will drive down in Lincoln Continental -- the Presidential limousine -- to the nearby the Taj Hotel.

Two jets, armed with advanced communication and security systems, and a fleet of over 40 cars will be part of Obamas convoy.

Around 800 rooms have been booked for the President and his entourage in Taj Hotel and Hyatt.

The President will have a security ring of American elite Secret Service, which are tasked to guard the President, along with National Security Guards (NSG) and personnel from central paramilitary forces and local police in Mumbai and Delhi.

Similar arrangements will be in place in Delhi, with the Air Force One to be kept in all readiness throughout Obama's stay here from Sunday afternoon to Tuesday morning.

Maurya Hotel, where the President will stay, has already been swarmed by American security personnel and protective measures have been put in place.

Security drills are already been carried out at the hotel as well as Rajghat which he will visit.

Sources said 13 heavy-lift aircraft with high-tech equipment, three helicopters and 500 US security personnel have arrived in India ahead of Obama's visit.

The US security has also brought interception and obstruction device, sniffer dogs, rescue gadgets.

Apart from Obama's Air Force One, a few private luxury jets carrying top American corporate leaders, who are part of Obama entourage, are also expected to arrive in India in next 2-3 days.

All high-rise buildings in the vicinity of Mumbai's Taj Mahal hotel and Delhi's Maurya Sheraton hotel, where the US President will stay, are being sanitised and security personnel will be positioned on rooftops to prevent any air-borne attack.

The Ridge area - opposite Delhi's Maurya Sheraton hotel - has been illuminated by floodlights as part of the heightened security drill.

The Home Ministry has already issued an alert for Mumbai and Delhi asking authorities to take extra precautions during Obama's visit as well as on Diwali on Friday.

US to spend $200 mn a day on Obama's Mumbai visit
Press Trust of India, Updated: November 03, 2010 08:25 IST

________________________ ________________________ _____________

Mumbai:  The US would be spending a whopping $200 million (Rs. 900 crore approx) per day on President Barack Obama's visit to the city.

"The huge amount of around $200 million would be spent on security, stay and other aspects of the Presidential visit," a top official of the Maharashtra Government privy to the arrangements for the high-profile visit said.

About 3,000 people including Secret Service agents, US government officials and journalists would accompany the President. Several officials from the White House and US security agencies are already here for the past one week with helicopters, a ship and high-end security instruments.

"Except for personnel providing immediate security to the President, the US officials may not be allowed to carry weapons. The state police is competent to take care of the security measures and they would be piloting the Presidential convoy," the official said on condition of anonymity.

Navy and Air Force has been asked by the state government to intensify patrolling along the Mumbai coastline and its airspace during Obama's stay. The city's airspace will be closed half-an-hour before the President's arrival for all aircraft barring those carrying the US delegation.

The personnel from SRPF, Force One, besides the NSG contingent stationed here would be roped in for the President's security, the official said.

The area from Hotel Taj, where Obama and his wife Michelle would stay, to Shikra helipad in Colaba would be cordoned off completely during the movement of the President.

Where is the official statement saying it's 200 m? Or is that based on the carbon footprint? 333 you are a attorney, you should know better, that unless you have concrete evidence, you have no case.

I posted all the sources for this.

34 Warships and their crew - thousands of people
3,000 people going along with POTUS
40 Jets -  crew - fuel - etc
800 Rooms for a week in the Hotel
etc etc.

200 Million a day is probably on the low side.

$200m-a-day' cost of Barack Obama's trip to India will be picked up by U.S. taxpayers

Comments (20) Add to My Stories President Obama's trip to India will cost the U.S. $200m-a-day, it was reported today.

The visit - part of a 10-trip to Asia - will take place amid unprecedented levels of security in the city of Mumbai, where terrorists killed at least 173 people two years ago.

Extreme measures to ensure the safety of President Obama will include the complete booking of the 570-room Taj Mahal Hotel for his security entourage.

High security: The visit to India by President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle is reportedly costing the U.S. $200m-a-day

The building saw some of the fiercest fighting between Islamic militant gunmen and security forces during the November 2008 atrocity.

Other precautions include the use of helicopters, US and Indian Navy ships to patrol the Mumbai waterfront and the use of sophisticated surveillance equipment.

The operation will cost the U.S. government the astonishing figure, a top Indian government source told the country's NDTV.

The source said: 'The huge amount of around $200 million would be spent on security, stay and other aspects of the Presidential visit.'

The news channel also claimed only senior bodyguards would be allowed to carry weapons for the visit.

Target: The Taj Mahal Hotel in Mumbai burns during the 2008 terror attack. President Obama is due to visit the building, which has been booked out by his staff

The source added: 'The state police is competent to take care of the security measures and they would be piloting the Presidential convoy.'

Details of the three-day visit which begins officially on Saturday are not being confirmed, but Indian Press reported the President was expected to spend the first day visiting the Taj Mahal Hotel and meeting survivors of the attacks.

The second day will reportedly see the President and First Lady meeting Mumbai school children and University students while the final day will involve a trip to New Delhi.

The visit could spark fury in the U.S. where officials are battling to reduce a record budget deficit, and heap further misery on beleaguered Democrats in the mid-term elections.

Sure Michelle, he really cares about the people doesn't he. "Let them eat cake" indeed. What about all those that have lost their jobs and homes Obama? What are you going to do to help these people? A bail out to the banks isn't the answer. Spending billions of their tax dollars on a freebie family holiday isn't going to help them is it? You are a disgrace... finally it looks like America has woken up to your hidden agenda. Enjoy the ride, you're on your way out.

I think this is a slap in the face to ordinary middle class families, that have to cut down on their expenses and maybe not even get to take a vacation with their families. Why does the President have to go there in the first place? It's not like he has to do thiswith so many people. No other President has done such an extravagent trip. It's shamful to spend that kind of money on a trip, when he has caused such a deficit in our economy. It's like, I'm the President and I can do and spend like I please, with no one holding him accountable. We all have to tighten our belts Mr. President, why don't you set the example.

This trip just makes me so angry, I could just spit. 2 Billion for a 10 day vacation. This president needs to go and the senate and congress needs to put the president on a budget. It would be better off if he stayed at home. It's time for politicians to stay at home with security being so expensive. Tele conferences would cost a lot less! Time for us to demand that all politicians stay at home. We have the same problem in Canada with Prime Minister HArper. His security costs are way too high. If politicians demand austerity from us we must demand austerity from them!

I cannot believe what our so called "leaders" are getting away with. Robbing us blind, telling us what is good for us and what we should want and how to live! I think Obama, Pelosi and Reid, and many other so-called "representatives" of the American people, have sunken to the very depths of depravity, and thus have been a blessing in disguise as we are finally tuned in to what government has been getting away with for so many years. Thank you for reminding us, that instead of you elitists living high on the hog at our expense, should fair no better than we peons, who you supposedly work for. This is absolute BALONEY!!! It is another example of O's elitism, a huge unnecessary expense, and a slap in the face to all US citizenry. The "Marie Antoinette" treatment.

200 m is small beer compared to the US/India 40 billion trade. This figure will rise so I'm sure the American taxpayer will get their money back and more.

WHAT? WHAT? Is this some sort of a JOKE? Our country is going down the tubes and he is on a $200,000,000 a day vacation in India? HAS THIS COUNTRY LOST THEIR MIND? How in the world can an Obama supporter condone this continued crap????

Tunnel for Obama near Mani Bhavan
DNA / Pandurang Mhaske / Thursday, November 4, 2010 1:59 IST

It could give a sense of superior American organisation, or be an indicator of a deep-set persecution complex. It could also be a manifestation of Uncle Sam’s penchant for a show of strength.

The matter pertains to US president Barack Obama’s planned visit to Mani Bhavan —the Gandhi museum — on November 6, soon after he reaches Mumbai. On Monday, US secret agents visited the museum to plan Obama’s security detail.

They were accompanied by officers of Mumbai Police and civic officials of the D ward (where Mani Bhavan is located). While inspecting the route and the buildings lining up the route to the museum, the Americans detected a skyscraper near Peddar road and also found the area to be highly populated.

Since it is difficult to monitor such a congested area, they came up with a quick solution which left the Indians accompanying them amazed: A bomb-proof over-ground tunnel — to be installed by US military engineers in just an hour.

The tunnel would be a kilometre long and measure 12ft by 12ft — enough to let Obama’s cavalcade pass through. The tunnel would be centrally air-conditioned, fitted with close-circuit television cameras, and will be heavily guarded at every point, including, of course, its entry and exit.

Details about when exactly the tunnel would be made were not forthcoming. But officials said that the structure would be dismantled immediately after Obama leaves the area.

1) trip looks terrible.  that 200 mil could hav ebeen spent in gulf region much better.

2) the 911 reference is an accurate one - people died on 911, the investigators called it a whitewash, and if you asked many repubs whether they'd like to see a 911 investigation into 3000 deaths, or an investigation into 3000 vacation - they'd choose the vacation.  Those people can suck one.  Repeatedly.  After cardio session.

We had an investigation.    Yes it was flawed and there should be another - but don't act like no one looked in to this.

As for the trip - this is going to be another Waterloo, just like the gaudy Spanish trip was, as was Health Care.

This Admn is so clueless you almost have to wonder if he is trying to be a one termer.

Obama taking 34 warships to India

Jay Bookman Obama’s supposed ‘$200 million-a-day trip to India’ a case study in pathological lunacy
11:26 am November 4, 2010, by Jay

Credibility no longer matters. Truth no longer matters.

And shame? Shame at being caught selling ridiculous falsehoods and lies? Hah!

Right-wing bloggers, media and politicians have seized on a report on an Indian Internet site, supposedly based on an anonymous estimate from an Indian government official, that President Obama will be spending $200 million a day on his India trip.

Now think about the impossibility of that. Two hundred million bucks a day? As Factcheck.org points out, the entire U.S. war effort in Afghanistan — where we have to arm, equip and provision roughly 100,000 troops in a hostile, barren environment — costs us $190 million a day. The claim is simply too ridiculous to be contemplated, let alone believed.

Yet as the clip above from Fox Business News demonstrates, the absurdity quickly became fuel for the vast right-wing outrage machine. (My favorite part above is where the outraged host, the genius Eric Bolling, insists: “I will tell you unequivocably, I am not making this up, this has been reported, go to the Internet, go take a look.” Really, they gave this guy a microphone and TV time?)

Drudge picked it up. Sean Hannity jumped in on it. Rush Limbaugh has been spreading the meme. U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann went on CNN to condemn the expenditure. And the blogosphere? Oh the lunacy!

I guess I shouldn’t be surprised. If you’re willing to believe that Obama is a Kenyan Marxist-fascist-anticolonialist black racist who hates America and plots its destruction, what won’t you believe.

But seriously people….

My guess is that the number is probably more than $200 Million.
