Under Armour Mouthpieces
« on: November 04, 2010, 07:09:50 AM »
Was at the dentist yesterday and saw an advertisement for "Under Armour Performance Mouthwear"  that supposedly enhances your athletic performance.

 ???  ???

www.underarmour.com

No one ever told you that your jaw could help
you perform better.
That’s because no one knew. Hundreds of years ago,
a few people were on to something: Ancient Greek
athletes who bit down on leather straps for an edge
during competition; Viking and Roman warriors
who clamped down on leather bits for focus on the
battlefield. They knew something here worked, but
the concept itself never evolved. Until now.ă_5

Under Armour Performance MouthwearTM has been
engineered to unlock your power and potential.
It’s all in you, but blocked by one of the human body’s
instinctive reflex systems – teeth-clenching. With safe,
custom-built UA Performance Mouthwear, athletes in
any sport — from football to golf to hockey — can
capitalize on innovation that makes you stronger,
faster and better.

Whether you need protection in contact sports or
you just want to improve your game, Under Armour
Performance MouthwearTM, with ArmourBiteTM
Technology, gives every athlete an edge.Đ_H

tí_+
UA Performance Mouthwear enlarges airway openings,
resulting in 25% less lactic acid build-up after 30 minutes
of intense exercise.
Speeds Up Reaction Time
Athletes may respond faster when wearing UA Performance
Mouthwear. Clinical trials show an improvement in responding
to auditory cues and potential improvement in response
to visual cues.
Reduces Athletic Stress
Excess cortisol causes stress, fatigue and distraction.
UA Performance Mouthwear decreases cortisol production,
which means you feel & play better.
Reduces Impact
When the jaw suffers an impact, energy can be transmitted
to the head, which can cause concussion. UA Performance
Mouthguards have been shown to reduce the G-Force impact
of blows to the jaw by up to 20%.

Yeah, custom mouth/jaw  pieces are pretty much stand football gear. And I don't have to tell you about boxers wearing one.  But anyone should be fitted for one, taking a mold, for best results. Just don't  go to the Big5 and pick one up, if serious about using one.

Guy's can have one to three, and maybe each a little different than the other one; thickness, firmness, colors, design, etc. One of the main ideas is to keep the lower jaw inline with the upper jaw. If you don't, than a dislocation/breaking could follow. Also keeping the upper and lower inline seems to help balance, focus and strength. A good mouth piece also can set up the important neck muscles better to take a shock or hard hit. So it's like keeping the jaw and neck muscles primed for whatever may happen.  The jaw/neck is related to the health of the spine and vice versa and can work together for better performance. You do get a shock wave up or down the spine, involving the neck/jaw, when hit hard enough. Helmet to helmet will do that very well. Massages(sport/deep) and spinal adjustment are part of training now days. Good Luck.

Some lifters will bite on a towel (or whatever) before a big lift, seen that now and than.  Good Luck.

Just to note: on rare occasion there will be a boxer who can suffer a broken or badly sprained ankle (sometimes knee) because of a extra hard head blow. That PSI force can travel down from the jaw-neck-spine-hips-hams-ankles to the floor/matt. Where the ankle take the max force. Extra jaw protection could and does help somewhat. Good Luck.

Can you give us an example of this actually happening?

Chaos:  No solid proof, as eye witness or video that I could refer too. As stated before, they are rare but do happen.  Occasional story, or video of a bout, will appear over the years. Maxboxing.com or other boxing sites might have older article about such stuff. If in doubt, do a search.   Pretty much dealing with body torque and the force generated. Good Luck.

JPM should have posted this on the G&O board.
More guys there can relate to this principle.

Many are accustomed to biting down on pillows during "hard training" sessions.
