Opinions on cortisone injections
« on: November 15, 2010, 12:46:24 PM »
After an MRI, doc says to go get 2 shots into the left shoulder to combat inflamed bursa and tendons but I'm much improved since it first happened and am continuing to improve slowly.

I'm doing a stretching routine daily along with shoulder stabilizing exercises.  I'm functioning more or less fine now, full body workouts are going fine, just not doing any overhead pressing (incline is ok).

I'm tempted to delay the shots scheduled for the 22nd and 23rd and see if issues resolve completely on their own.  Anyone been in a similar situation?

Thanks Monte.  Was your tendonitis showing any improvement before you had the shot?

Also, I'm pain free unless I move wrong (and then I know all about it).  Were you in constant pain or did it only hurt with certain movements?

The pain was not chronic in the sense that I could feel it, for instance, just laying in bed, but it was approaching that point.
Weight was unnecessary; I could feel the searing in my medial condyles simply by turning or flexing my hands/forearms a certain way.

I was given cortisone shots in each elbow with follow up treatments of ultrasound & iontophoresis for several weeks combined with PT stretching and strengthening exercises.

It’s difficult to say how much of my healing was attributed to the treatment because:
#1.) The immediate, most dramatic relief only lasted for a day or so before much of the pain returned.
#2.) I backed way off of ALL training (including legs) for several weeks, and when I returned, I still avoided the movements that bothered me most for a while longer.

Overall, I greatly reduced the volume, intensity, and frequency of my training for a time.
Within several months, the pain was completely gone, and I was able to work my way back up to full, workouts!
I credit rest and smarter training as having the biggest impact on my recovery, although, I have no regrets about the shots and would still recommend them for anyone in my or your situation.

Remember that tendon inflammation - particularly epicondylitis - is often caused by overuse; not necessarily weight.
Tennis elbow is symptomatic of people who swing a tennis racket, and how much does that weigh?
It’s the repetition of that serve & swing over and over…

I’ve found a "comfy" training split that I’ve been using for about the last 3 years - high volume, good intensity, very low frequency - and I’ve made excellent progress with it.
The best part is that it’s all pain free!
And yes, I'm doing everything I did before - even the movements that bothered me/caused my problems.
With better technique and recovery, I've got no problems at all, now.

Thanks for taking the time to give a detailed explanation, man.  It sounds like your problems were more persistent than mine.  Glad things came good for you.  The severity of my problems has definitely decreased on their own, from an inability to lift the arm to the front at all without major pain to it's current state which is more or less pain free except for the occasional twinge through certain movements (which I'm trying to avoid at work).

Figure I'll reschedule the cortisone injections for a bit later and see how it's going.  Forgot to mention, they're charging $220 per shot, so $440 all told, all out of pocket.  ::)  Wouldn't even think about it if things were as bad as 3 or 4 weeks ago, but as things stand I'm tempted to keep my cash.

You're welcome.
And, if you're seeing signs of improvement now, I'd postpone the shots, too - especially for that price.

Good luck!
