The first time he entered the Mr. Universe he was beat easily by Robby Robinson. He tried it again and he was destroyed by an in shape Kalman Szkalak who was bigger, more cut and body part by body part was a cut above except for calves. In the 1980 Olympia he didn't come in second or third he came in fifth. If you watch the actual tape of it you would see how deserved 5th.

his teachings were totally opposed to weider principles.

weider was bodybuilding, so he didn't get much love.

not to mention he didn't push supplements like weider wanted - again another nail.

after he did those universes or whatever, then after the 80 O, he stopped competing

I knew Mike and Ray fairly well and am a bit surprised that FatPanda offered a pretty accurate but part-appraisal of the situation.

And also .... Mike had little respect for Arnold due to a number of reasons but mainly because he thought that the Arnold/Weider friendship did not allow fair and impartial decisions within certain IFBB contentions.

On one occasion we had a 4 to 5 hour meeting with about 15 amateur contestants immediately following a contest in which Mike spoke openly and honestly about his relationship with the IFBB. He made it clear that he had no respect for Arnold and that fact that he was a friend of Joe's.

That was the time when Mike was planning to publish a new magazine ... which some of you GetBiggers may know more about than myself.

Interesting list - considering he was only one place away from winning the Mr O in 1979 he got pretty close.

IIRC, he was the only bodybuilder to ever achieve a perfect score of "300" at the Mr. Universe, which I believe he won.
His book, Heavy Duty Journal, shows how important drugs are to the "sport".
On a calorie deficient diet, he gained 9 pounds of muscle, wherein he did the same diet "clean", he lost 4 pounds.
His diet was quite frankly, stupid, even though he was chemically enhanced, and this is coming from a true Mentzer disciple.

No, I have the HD Journal from the 1979 Olympia at my house. It was given to me by Roger Schwab of Main Line Health and Fitness (formerly Main Line Nautilus) where Mike would occassionaly train.
Roger is a former judge for the IFBB and taught me a ton about HIT training.

Mentzer did not have two IFBB pro wins in 1979. He won the Southern Pro Cup on February 3, 1979- which was his only IFBB pro win ever.
