Powerlifters generally dont have big legs (big in relation to their squatting #s) because they squat with a low bar, wide stance technique, which has the hips as dominant muscles. Quadriceps are not dominant in a PL squat. However, when we are looking at olympic lifters they (almost) all seem to have huge, developed quads. This is because they squat highbar, close stance, and ass to the grass, all while being in an upright position. Squatting this way is quad dominant. Oh btw, they almost never squat "high rep" but keep their working repranges in the 1-6 reps.

Hope this helps. :)

actually i never knew olympic lifters did bodybuilding squats. is that mandatory for them?  this guys quads are awesome. (not to mention hes sexy as fuck..  :o )

he has the ultimate physique!

i heard some powerlifters don't even do backsquats, just front, as it more closely mimics the snatch and clean/jerk.

Exactly. I could fullsquat 315 for reps when I was 17. I rarely ever see anyone training legs like they should.

Cool vids man.. thats insane clean & press

They squat with bar over their head, after jerk, the centre of balance is, well...centre, thats why they need to stay more upright than powerlifters...me thinks they often train by front squating

For Olympic Lifting, the order usually goes Front/Back/Over-head squat(as mentioned, you squat with the bar held at lock-out, the Chinese squad use it a lot now). Also, if you look at the 2 major lifts(three if you count the discontinued Clean and Press), there is a decent amount of front squatting during the first part of those lifts.

As an aside, the general rule was that a good lifter should be able to Clean what they can Front squat for a triple. The second part of the lift, the Jerk is usually a tiny bit under what you Clean.

Front Squat usually equals 85-90% of back squat.

Snatch equals 80% of C/J or 60 to 65% of back squat.

I have not seen or can remember ratios for OH squat. But I guess 3/4 of your best back squat is a good number.

9 reps, not easy for a guy bodyweight around 220 lbs.

Not bad? Who else looks like that and squats 2X their own body weight 9 times?

yep,, some amazing quads on olympic lifters..

but same could be said of footballers ( soccer players in american speak) , sprint cyclists and sprint ice skaters, most have the big thick quad development round the knee, and alot of them dont even do direct quad work either....
