When a proposal to encourage end-of-life planning touched off a political storm over “death panels,” Democrats dropped it from legislation to overhaul the health care system. But the Obama administration will achieve the same goal by regulation, starting Jan. 1.

Under the new policy, outlined in a Medicare regulation, the government will pay doctors who advise patients on options for end-of-life care, which may include advance directives to forgo aggressive life-sustaining treatment.

Congressional supporters of the new policy, though pleased, have kept quiet. They fear provoking another furor like the one in 2009 when Republicans seized on the idea of end-of-life counseling to argue that the Democrats’ bill would allow the government to cut off care for the critically ill.

think about this for a second.  Wouldn't doctors have a greater incentive to keep people alive so they can make MORE money.

the greatest expenses in health care are usually in the last few years of life.  If anything, the doctors have an incentive to prescribe more expensive and ineffective treatment the older or more sick a person becomes.  That's a real financial incentive.

The reality is that we all will eventually die and we will all need to make some PLANS for end of life care.   My brother sister and I had to do this with my mother a few months ago (she's not near death but she had Parkinson's so she knows what will inevitably happen and is making PLANS now).    This is not a death panel.  It's just part of normal care and planning of the end of life.

If there were no precedent for it then maybe so but we have 3 branches of government and I presume he is completely within his authority by doing so.  

Do you remember Bush (and his acolytes) talking about the Unitary Executive theory.   Do you remember all those signing statements where Bush just voided parts of the legislation that he didn't like?

What is being overlooked is the doors this type of legislation could open in the future.  that is my problem with it.
