Jared Loughner is being held as the sole suspect in the shooting of U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords (on 1/8/2011). The public is struggling to figure out what was going on in side of Loughner's head when he
shot Giffords and 17 others. Today we learned that he has an interest that should be familiar to anyone who has seen the movie "Inception."
The 2010 film Inception, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, tells the story of a group of corporate spies who infiltrate business people's dreams in order to extract secrets. One scene shows a room full of people who have taken drugs so that they can dream. The main characters are told that, for these people, their dreams have become more real than the real world. The practice of being conscious within one's own dreams (and consequently being able to control events in the dream world) is real, and is called "lucid dreaming." Stephen LaBerge and other scientists have studied the phenomenon extensively. There is also a large body of self-help books that teach people how to induce lucid dreams. Consequently, it is possible for people to create a dream world that they can occupy night after night. [Source: Lucid Dreaming - Wikipedia. Downloaded 1/9/2011 from

It appears that Arizona shooter Jared Loughner is an example of a person who became so caught up in his lucid dreaming world that he lost touch with reality. He reportedly became obsessed with lucid dreaming, keeping records of his dream-world experiences, and told friends that "the world we see does not exist, that words have no meaning - and that the only way to derive meaning was during sleep."
