Friend needs help with training
« on: January 10, 2011, 05:28:31 PM »
Here is part of the email he sent me. Friendly advice will be appreciated

Any of your friends have any tips on heavy lifting or getting more cut? I've been consistent since May and I've worked up to some heavy lifts, especially squats last month. Dumbbell bench 110x7, incline DB bench 95x10, cable row 240x8. I'm trying to drop from 220ish to below 200 but stay muscular so I get leaner. Weight comes off a lot slower this way. My type 2 diabetes and blood pressure are under control though so it's good. I quit drinking this month to try to get the weight off faster. I do intervals for cardio on my bike 45 minutes with 6 one minute sprints or running for about 30 minutes with the same sprints.

his diet will be a big part of his success. Probably more so than the training.

if he keeps same numbers on lifts and eats around the same amount or more of protein, in theory he shouldnt loose so much lean muscle, but somtimes the body doesnt work like that

diet is where he's most probly lacking, has to keep it plain and simple for 6 to 7 meals per day

The "quitting drinking" part will end up being a larger part of the equation than most imagine. Blood alcohol sugar is just a plain bitch. The older you get, the more it sabatoges fit bodies.

Don't get too into "heavy" lifting. It takes its toll on the joints sooner or later, and when that time comes, there is not much you can do except deal with the pain for the duration of the remainder of your life.

Benefit to risk ratio will always be in favor of consistency and moderate weights with precise form-- go for the pump.

Get the calories in intervals and as clean as possible. If there is any juice left for cardio, use it sparingly.

Committment.

If your friend could stop drinking completely and substitute with water, the physique he is looking for will come much quicker-- if this "friend" happens to be female, double or triple the equation just b/c of the backlash from estrogen levels instead of testosterone hormones.

Stick with it. Good luck and fortune in their endeavors. 'Time is a tickin...'

you listen to dyslexics advice he will end up a skinny fat pussy  ;D

tell him to keep the weights heavy, focus on getting stronger on the basics while using good form and warming up properly. three meals a day, no need for a fancy diet, just make sure he eats a good portion of meat at every meal and keeps calories controlled. increase the cardio when fat loss slows or he wants faster results.

It usually takes a long time to kick in and then I only sleep a few hours. Any little noise wakes me up. Definitely not all its cracked up to be. I only take it when I need to force myself to go to sleep if I have to get up super early the next day.

Problem is, if I don't just go to bed right away (and get on the puter) -- the next day when I look through my posts, sometimes I am surprised at WTF I said. It comes on so slowly I don't feel the transition from conscious to un-conscious...

Good to follow directions. Take pill, go directly to bed!

Got to blame something- be to easy to blame myself for just being an A-hole.

If I may ask a question and you don't have to answer. Is this prescribed for sleeping reasons. I was prescribed mine while taking zoloft

Most definitely.

Some people get hooked on it. I know a pretty famous fitness model who was living (sleeping) on the stuff all day and all night. Eventually it stopped working the way it was intended so she just used it to party on.

If you've ever seen the movie "Role Models" - the movie alludes to many things that can be done on the stuff.

Best bet though, (like anything) is to use in moderation. If I use it for more than 3 nights in a row, I will be more inclined to use it the 4th. If I only use it when I truly feel I need it, I may only use it once every 10 days. It all depends on my work schedule.

PM me if you would like, no prob.

We all know what happens when we try to be perfect now...

(and I don't think I'm "dream-posting" at the moment)

I'm actually so lazy right now I don't even want to read what this thread is about, what I posted or why...

Does anybody else ever do that? I remember the days of internet forum posting where we would argue for days and stay up to keep the battle going regardless of whether we were right or wrong.

Now I don't even care. Ha ha. I just hope I'm not the Lone Ranger here...
