Hey Van, I've met Louie Simmons plenty of times, although I'm sure dat he wouldn't remember ma 160 pound twink ass ;) And you are excatly right about power squatters not having big wheels.

Yeah and they actually try to take their quads out of the movement when squatting. The idea being that you sit back on the box, not moving the shin bone. Then you engage the hips, ass, hams, back when you come up. Now Olympic squatters have great quads and they do the opposite. They use squat shoes with elevated heels (unlike the "Westside squatters"), use a narrow stance and don't mind if the knees travel over the feet. All this engages the quads to a greater extent. And it shows.

I don't know if tbombz knows about these powerlifter techniques and the reason for using them. But Coach just has a disdain for him because he thinks it's just a snotnose know-nothing kid with no experience so he dismisses him offhand and doesn't offer a reason for his exercise selection. Whether through instinct or whatever he was still basically right if we're talking building quads.   :D

If Coach has a good reason for doing box squats for bb I'm all ears.  8)

What's the bodybuilding utility of box squats though? Why do you do them coach? I've done a shitload of box squats and my legs are sticks. Not much use for building quads IMO, except in a few cases.

Box squats are especially useful for powerlifters squatting in suits, often using a very wide stance. And very few of them have much quad development. Some of the best box squatters you can hardly tell train their legs. It's mostly a posterior chain movement.

Remember what Louie Simmons had Francois do to grow his legs? (for those that don't know Simmons is probably the biggest reason box squats are so popular)

Perhaps tbombz isn't so far off after all.  :D

I squat twice a week. ME lower, thats when I use the box, then DE lower, but instead of doing a speed squat, I take away the box and do deep fairly high rep squats.

Did you do the powerlifting meet you were talking about a year or two ago? Did you start doing regular deads instead of the trap bar deads?  :D

Speaking of powerlifting techniques, bands are great. Rack deads with bands are insane. You never felt tension like that throughout your back. Bands on pressing movements are nice as well. May even reduce shoulder pain during the movement if that's a problem. Rig some bands to a smith machine for chest work.  :D

You lost me at smith machine.  Why not bands on a regular bench in a rack?

I do both variations of DL, yesterday on ME day, I did trap bar to 415x3 paired w/high knee step ups x 10 and finished w/ GH raise paired w/jump band good mornings.

Well it's kind of unstable for someone not used to it if you attach the bands to the rack, i.e. a bodybuilder, plus I know Coach hates the smith machine.  :D

The lazy but stable feeling version of using bands is this. Of course with regular bar weight added.

Gotcha.  I would consider the increased instability to be a positive, though.

Exactly. There's no shame in losing as long as you do your best.

That's why on April 15th i'm gonna put on my light blue thong, shave down my body hair, rub oil all over myself and pose like Zeus the god of thunder.

And I will win that fucking shit for sure. Everyone else better be scared. Better be shitting your pants cause I am the KING of bodybuilding.

LOL! I know you piss a lot of people off but you definitely bring some personality to this board.

Sorry guys, but I love this guy's work. He cracks me up.

Wouldn't chains being superior and more stable than bands? I can see using chains on squats since it would come closer to matching the strength curve since the resistance would increase as you push out of the bucket (your weakest point) and increase the load as you approach lockout. But I'm not sure with other movements.

I thought box squats were obsolete because of the risks of spine compression at the bottom. And you take tension off the quads as you sit on the box. What's the point? Just do full ass to heel squats even if it means you have to use lighter weight.
