Allen West Sends Chick-Fil-A To Black Caucus Meeting And Offends Everyone, Says Dem Rep

Posted: 08/07/2012 1:38 pm Updated: 08/07/2012 2:51 pm

Rep. Alcee Hastings (D-Fla.) said Rep. Allen West (R-Fla.) offended "every member" of the Congressional Black Caucus by delivering Chick-fil-A food to their weekly meeting.

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- A Democratic lawmaker says Rep. Allen West (R-Fla.) offended the entire Congressional Black Caucus by delivering Chick-fil-A chicken and biscuits to their weekly meeting -- and then walking out -- when it was his turn to provide the group with a formal lunch.

Rep. Alcee Hastings (D-Fla.) told The Huffington Post that the incident happened about six months ago but is now fresh in his mind given West's recent comments in support of the fast food chain, which is run by a well-known Christian and backer of anti-gay religious organizations. Chick-fil-A president Dan Cathy last week sparked a nationwide response from gay rights activists after publicly denouncing marriage equality.

"We have a rotation in the Congressional Black Caucus where every member provides the lunch one of the weeks when we meet," Hastings said in a Monday interview. The lunches, he said, are often quite delicious.

"We have fried chicken. And we have catfish and BBQ. We do not have watermelon, although sometimes people will have fruit. We serve a full course meal with collard greens. We have Jamaican beans and rice," Hastings said. But West "sent Chick-fil-A with biscuits. Ok?"

"That was an 'in your face.' Every member of the Congressional Black Caucus that was there was offended," he said.

Asked more specifically why lawmakers were insulted, Hastings said it was because they saw West's actions as making a statement in support of the conservative views held by Chick-fil-A leaders. West is the only Republican member of the caucus.

"He did it deliberately," Hastings said, explaining that he saw West's message as, "You know, 'That's what I think of you all.'"

The Democratic lawmaker said West hasn't been back to any CBC meetings since then.

A West spokeswoman did not respond to a request for comment. A spokeswoman for the CBC also did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Hastings and West represent adjacent districts in Florida. Hastings is in a solidly Democratic district, but West is running in a newly drawn district this year, the bulk of which President Barack Obama won in 2008. Despite the close proximity of their districts, Hastings said they never talk, not even in passing on Capitol Hill.

"He doesn't speak to me by his own choosing," Hastings said, taking issue with some of West's harsh personal attacks on fellow Florida Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D). Among other things, West last year called her "vile, despicable and cowardly" for challenging his views on Medicare during a House floor debate.

"I wouldn't want to go into his mental state," Hastings added. "All I know is his verbiage and his rhetoric is way over the top. Way over the top."

'Regular Guy' Allen West to Spend $6 Million on 2014 Candidates
Thursday, 04 Apr 2013
By Sandy Fitzgerald

Former Florida Rep. Allen West says he plans to spend $6 million on midterm elections next year in support of 12 conservative candidates who are either minorities are military veterans.

West, who lost his re-election bid last year, told Yahoo News that he commends his fellow Republicans for trying to attract more minorities but doesn't believe they will succeed.

"There's fertile ground there, and I'm not going to sit back there and wait for [the Republican Party]. I'm going to do it myself," he said. "I don't want people to have to struggle as I did. I want them to know that there's a place that they can come to for assistance so I can be an advocate for them to help them out."

Still a favorite among many conservatives. as evidenced by the warm reception he received last month at the Conservative Political Action Conference, West refers to himself now as just "a regular guy" who happens to co-host an online talk show on pjmedia.com that still allows him to take shots at the Democrats and what he calls the liberal media.

Michelle Fields, one of his fellow co-hosts, says he seems a lot calmer since he left Congress, despite still being engaged on many issues.

"I feel like his guard has come down," Fields said. "He's so much more relaxed and so much more personable now that he's on the show. It's probably just the stress of the election that got to him, and now it's wonderful that we have an opportunity to see who Allen really is."

West has no immediate plans to run for office again. He joked with Yahoo that even Abraham Lincoln only served one term.

Allen West Joins Fox News As Contributor
Posted: 05/17/2013 8:50 am EDT  |  Updated: 05/17/2013 12:46 pm EDT

Fox News announced on Friday that former Tea Party congressman Allen West has joined the network as a contributor.

West's hiring was the latest in a string of former politicos to join the network. Earlier this year, Fox News severed ties with Sarah Palin and Dick Morris. The network later hired Scott Brown, who guest hosted his first-ever primetime show last month, and Dennis Kucinich.

Fox News' Bill Shine said in a statement obtained by The Washington Post, "Representative West’s congressional and military experience along with his fearless approach to voicing key issues will provide a valuable point of view to the FOX News lineup."

West was elected congressman of Florida's 22nd congressional district in 2010, beating out Democratic incumbent Ron Klein. Due to redistricting, West switched to Florida's 18th congressional district for the 2012 election and eventually lost his seat to the Democratic candidate, Patrick Murphy.

Allen West: I May Challenge Rubio for Senate Seat
Wednesday, 19 Jun 2013
By Andrea Billups

Former U.S. Rep. Allen West said Wednesday that he hasn't ruled out a challenge to Florida Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, even as the former congressman acknowledged that it would be a difficult and expensive road to take.

West, a favorite of conservatives who lost his House seat in 2012, said he'd draw on his faith to make a decision on a future political contest.

"We'll see what happens down the pike," West said on WMAL's "Morning at the Mall" radio show. "God will set my feet on the right path."

West has ruled out running for the House again in 2014 while Rubio is considered a contender for the Republican presidential nomination in 2016, the same year as his first term as senator ends.

When host Larry O'Connor prompted him about what might make him step up to national politics again, West responded, "If I see people that are not taking our country down the right path, if I see people that are not standing up for the right type of principles, and putting their own party politics before what is best for the United States of America."

West acknowledged a Senate bid against a popular incumbent would present problems: "That's a pretty heavy lift, because you're talking about running against a sitting senator, and then, of course, that creates that schism that the other side would love to see happen."

But O'Connor pushed back, noting that Rubio himself had done something similar when the Miami native ran against sitting Gov. Charlie Crist in the 2010 Senate primary.

Crist, once a rising star in the Republican Party, both in Florida and nationally, later pulled out of the primary race to stand as an independent in the general election, where he was handily defeated by Rubio.

Primaries are a good thing.  Will be interesting to see how this plays out.  He is a Great American.

Allen West announces he is running against Gov. Greg Abbott in Republican primary
The Texas GOP chairman made his campaign official Sunday.
BY PATRICK SVITEK
JULY 4, 2021

Texas GOP Chairman Allen West announced Sunday he is running for governor, challenging fellow Republican Greg Abbott.

The announcement was made during at appearance by West at Sojourn Church in Carrollton, where the former Florida congressman played a video launching his campaign.

“I’ve not been in elected political office for about a decade, but I can no longer sit on the sidelines and see what has happened in these United States of America and ... the place that I call home," West said in the video, which was preceded by West reading aloud the Declaration of Independence to the churchgoers gathering on July Fourth.

West's campaign launch comes about a month after he announced his resignation as state party chairman. The resignation is effective July 11, when the State Republican Executive Committee is set to meet to pick West's successor as chair.

West quickly hinted that he was considering a run for statewide office after he announced his resignation, though speculation had run rampant for months that he was eying a bigger job. As state party chairman, he did not shy away from conflict with state leaders, most notably Abbott.

Since his election as Texas GOP chair in July of last year when he soundly beat then-incumbent James Dickey, West has criticized Abbott's coronavirus response and sought to push the governor's legislative agenda further to the right. Last fall, he spoke at a protest outside the governor's mansion demanding that Abbott fully reopen the state amid the pandemic.

Abbott has mostly ignored West's attacks. But the governor has increasingly catered to his right flank in recent months as he has appeared to try to tamp down potential vulnerabilities ahead of his reelection campaign.

West did not directly mention Abbott in his remarks Sunday in the church or in the video. West used the video to sketch out a platform focused on shielding the state's energy resources against the Green New Deal — the sweeping climate change proposal pushed by some Democrats in Washington, D.C. — securing the state's border "to ensure that Texas is for Texans" and combatting sex trafficking.

Abbott's campaign did not immediately respond to request for a comment on West's announcement.

Abbott received his first credible primary challenger in May, when former state Sen. Don Huffines of Dallas launched a bid against Abbott. Huffines issued a statement welcoming West to the race, saying he looked forward to West "joining our efforts to make clear that Texans can do better than Greg Abbott."

Conservative commentator Chad Prather has also announced a primary challenge to Abbott and similarly cheered on West's candidacy.

Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller weighed running against Abbott as well but announced last month he would instead seek reelection to his current job.

Facing the intraparty angst, Abbott also has embraced former President Donald Trump more than ever. In June, he secured Trump's endorsement for reelection, announced Texas would build its own border wall to finish the job started under Trump and invited Trump to the state for a border tour.

West is also a vocal Trump ally, though he has brushed off the impact of Trump's endorsement on his future political plans.

"You know, I don't serve President Trump," West said in June. "I serve God, country and Texas. So that does not affect me whatsoever."

West represented Florida in Congress from 2011-2013. He moved to Texas in 2014 to become the CEO of the National Center for Policy Analysis, a Dallas think tank that shuttered three years later.

The SREC is scheduled to meet July 11 in Lewisville to elect someone to finish West's term as state GOP chair. Candidates include David Covey, president of the Texas Republican County Chairmen's Association; Matt Rinaldi, a former state representative from Irving; and Chad Wilbanks, a former executive director of the state party.
