J.Crew Ad Showing Boy With Pink Nail Polish Sparks Debate on Gender Identity
By Diane Macedo

Jenna Lyons holds son Beckett's pedicured foot in as text below the image reads, "Lucky for me I ended up with a boy whose favorite color is pink. Toenail painting is way more fun in neon."

A J.Crew ad that shows a top designer painting her young son’s toenails neon pink has some parents and doctors seeing red.

The image appeared in a feature called "Saturday With Jenna," which was emailed to customers last week and highlights a few of J.Crew president and creative director Jenna Lyons’ favorite products -- including the hot pink Essie nail polish seen on her son, Beckett.

The caption below the picture reads, “Lucky for me I ended up with a boy whose favorite color is pink. Toenail painting is way more fun in neon.”
But not everyone sees fun in the ad.

“This is a dramatic example of the way that our culture is being encouraged to abandon all trappings of gender identity,” psychiatrist Dr. Keith Ablow wrote in a FoxNews.com Health column about the ad.

Media Research Center’s Erin Brown agreed, calling the ad “blatant propaganda celebrating transgendered children.”

“Not only is Beckett likely to change his favorite color as early as tomorrow, Jenna's indulgence (or encouragement) could make life hard for the boy in the future,” Brown wrote in an opinion piece Friday.  "J.CREW, known for its tasteful and modest clothing, apparently does not mind exploiting Beckett behind the facade of liberal, transgendered identity politics.”

But Jo B. Paoletti, author of “Pink and Blue: Telling the Girls From the Boys in America” told FoxNews.com she believes critics are overreacting.

“Lots of kids, say 7 and under, might ask their parents for something that would seem to be cross gender, and I think most parents, especially in the privacy of their own home might think, what’s the big deal?" Paoletti said.

J.Crew spokeswoman Margot Fooshee said the company had no comment on the ad. Jenna Lyons did not respond to direct requests for comment.

When asked if the ad crossed the line, a majority of Fox News Twitter users backed Paoletti.

“What line would that be? Not forcing your child to like a color just because gender stereotypes say they should?” one commenter known as along_the_path wrote.

But not everyone agreed.

“Why would I want my son to paint his toenails pink?” ohthatmomma wrote. “Why woukd [sic] I want my son to paint his toenails at all?”

It's all part of the globalists plan to turn men into obedient pussies so we are easier to control.  That is why you see all these emo kids and Justin Bieber types looking like little girls as if it's a good thing.

I would think gender identity has nothing to do with what a person wears.

why would you think that oz?

gender identity is how you see yourself...either as a male or female

this is why I always say that gender and sex are not the same thing but tons of ppl on here never understand...gender is a mental thing, sex is a biological thing.

if you identify yourself as a female then you will try to align yourself with the female traits if you choose to indulge that so culture plays a big role in how gender identity expresses itself.

Actually "gender identity" has a specific definition that includes "gender related appearance."

That's pretty fucked, I had a friend who's single mom use to put him in dresses as a toddler, and put bows in his hair.  She has pictures of him dressed like a girl all over her house.  The kids a pro football player now.

This is really a big deal? Didn't your kids walk around in your wife's shoes and shit?

Mine did... walked around all girly and said "I look like a lady".

He was just messing around and thought it was funny...

Why is this even a big deal at all?

Disgusting.

Why?

It's all part of the globalists plan to turn men into obedient pussies so we are easier to control.  That is why you see all these emo kids and Justin Bieber types looking like little girls as if it's a good thing.

Are you insane? Emo kids have always looked that way... Ever since the coffee shop days of poetry readings in the 60s.... Androgynous music of the 80s and so on.

Kids follow parents examples and one time of wearing high heels or painted nails or whatever does not make a gender.

You guys are far too sensitive... Now if they let their kid walk out of the house wearing it, then we have an entirely different context and I get it, but something that is supposed to be "goofing off at the house"... so what?

Yeah I think I have seen you debate issue like this a lot here.

It just struck me upon first treading this that how a person dresses shouldnt determine his or her gender
identity.  So maybe I missed the point in what gender identity means as beach referred to.

It has been a while, but we talked a little about this several years ago.  Still as confusing today as it was then IMO; especially the "gender-related self-image" part, whatever that means.  http://www.getbig.com/boards/index.php?topic=134605.0

Yep,  it wasn't communism....

It wasn't the Chinese.....

It wasn't the terrorists......

It was pink nail polish that brought the country to its knees.

If only the 19 hijackers knew that before 9/11

I am traveling to Seattle next week.  I'll be sure to see if pink nail polish is on the poster with knives and explosives.

You clowns in california are really nuts.    do you think a male brought up painting his toe nails pink and playing with gay shit his whole life is going to take on those terrorists in the plane?

You do realize that kids do shit when they are young... It's obviously not his entire life.

You got kids? Did your 3 or 4 year old never run around in your wife's shoes?

I can honestly say i never painted my nails pink.  I played with bb guns, sling shots, knives, m80's, paint ball guns, fishing rods etc.

Then you are obviously the only one... Every little 3 year old wears his mom's shoes around and does retarded shit when he's little... It's called being a kid and thinking you're funny.

My kid did it... most kids did it... It happens all the time... Then when they get to be about 8 or so... They start playing with BB guns, and shit like that. Once their social interaction is more than with their mother all the time and they start hanging out with other boys and what not, they start doing more "guy" stuff.

My son stopped when he was about 4 or so, because he was in daycare with a lot of other boys and they did boy stuff... That's how it goes.

I am pretty sure at one point in time my son got is nails painted by his mom while she was doing hers... he would inevitably be around when she was doing her nails or what not and he would say, oh, i wanna do that, and she would do it.

They would take it off before he went to pre-school or whatever and that was that.

And look how you turned out.  A blind hatred for authority and a belief that the world will end any moment so your dried food packets will come in handy.
Abandon every hope...

There is a difference between boys and girls and how they should be raised.  I see big difference between a toddler walking around the house in his mom's (and dad's) shoes, and a boy's toenails being painted like he's a chick.  We are raising a generation of sissies.  (Sissy does not = homosexual.)

Dude... when you're 3... they are the same thing.

Do you guys even have boys? Don't you have a bunch of girls BB? Didn't you ever play football with them? Or something of that nature? None of them were ever a little tomboyish as little girls?
