2 people I know can do legit 1 arm chins.

Both were between 155 and 175lbs but could chin with well over 100lbs attached to them for reps.

I can do 85lbs attached for 4-5 reps if I'm feeling froggy but I have only messed with 100lbs once. It was 1 rep with horrible horrible form. How did your buddies manage the 1 arms? I only think about trying them at the gym but don't want to look like any more of a tool than I already am trying to do them.

They say you need to be able to chin 185% your bodyweight.

They hung a rope over a chinning bar and started off grabbing the rope with the supporting arm at teh top and doing chins that way. Then very gradually over time moving their hand down furthur and furthur the rope Eventually there comes a point where holding onto the rope wont help at all and you will be able to do a OAC.

I can rep 100lbs for a few reps but never going to be able to do one at my bw.

Most people who do chins, should stick to pulldowns as they never do the chins right anyfuckingway!!

100% correct.

most are just swinging through a partial range of motion.  Those who think pull-ups are easy should try doing them from a dead hang to the point where upper arms press against the torso without any swing.  ALL SQUEEZE

Thoughts on adding resistance?

You can barbell press 134kg for 6-8 reps.  Yeah, you don't need our advice.

I've done weighted chins for a long time and I like them but I've never managed to use more than 35lbs with decent form. I was chinning with 40lbs for a few weeks but hurt my shoulder so I backed off for a little while. Have just started back with them.

Does anyone do pullups with added resistance?  I just started incorporating added resistance to my pullups to increase the intensity, overall strength and improve the amount of reps I can do.  Normally I can do 5 sets of 10-15 reps without added weight, but I'm throwing in sets with a 25 pound plate and a 45 pound plate.  I weigh about 225 and can do 2 sets of the 25 pound plate for 8-10, and a set with the 45 for about 5-6 good reps. I'd like to be able to hit the 45 pound plate for about 3-4 sets of 10-12 reps.  Thoughts on adding resistance?

You will most likely stagnate. Pullups are so bodyweight dependant, it would probably be easier hitting your goal just by losing weight than training your ass off. From people who can do a lot of them, like real gymnasts, they don't do much, if any , bar pull ups. They do stuff like front and back levers on bars and rings, which are more demanding, but have great carryover to pull ups and chins. They are also lean and don't have the heavyweight body type.

nah I'm barely over 150.

This guys is definitely strong.  Possibly the strongest pull-up in absolute terms, but ofcourse there are smaller guys like cisco or zef with much better relative strength

I can rep 100lbs for a few reps but never going to be able to do one at my bw.

Considering the source, I find this believable. I'm definitely going to try those one-finger chins until I can do a OAC.

Don't do the one fingers.

Use the rope trick working lower and lower down the rope with one arm over time. The two people I know did this. However keep chinning also!

I meant just to see if I can. it *looks* easy enough. Tongue Also I'm having a hard time visualizing the rope trick?

Ok so thats a guy hanging one arm on a chinning bar and holding the rope at the top near the bar. Over time move your hand more and more down the rope until it is below your waist. Then you should be able to OAC

yeah that method works...that was nice of you ursus to take the time to make even that crude drawing.
