Been around the music industry along time and without a doubt the Beatles.
Not enough credit is given to their producer though who was truly the 5th member.
The things they did production wise with only a four track recorder is AMAZING!

Not only how George Martin produced them, but he also had a classical background IIRC and he added a lot to the sound when they were doing songs such as "Eleanor Rigby" and "In My Life" to mention a couple.

Some say it was "officially" Billy Preston being the fifth Beatle, but that's so far off and untrue. George Martin all the way.

True dat! My fav Beatles album is Abbey Road, which was kinda dominated by Paul and George. George with "Something" and "Here Comes The Sun" and Paul was basically the "solo artist" on side two. And speaking of Stevie Wonder, his album "Innervisions" was revolutionary 8)

Classic Rock- The Rolling Stones
Hard Rock- Led Zeppelin

I'll go with these two. And Sabbath for metal.

If you talk about rock, then the correct answers are Chuck Berry and his fellow black rock n' rollers.

King Crimson, Frank Zappa, Dream Theater, Liquid Tension Experiment...all kick ass Prog bands

Prince influenced a lot of musicians.

Zeppelin ruled them all.

Nirvana influenced a whole new genre that is still around today.  I wasn't a big fan but appreciate them more now than I did back then.

Beatles... Zep...

However, even those guys were influenced by Chuck Berry, Elvis, etc... Who were influenced by Jazz, the blues, and Big Band stuff... who were influenced by folk music of the 19th century, who were influenced by classical composers.

... who were influenced by a guy named Grog, who rhythmically beat his club against a cave wall.

Well, most classical music came from ancient gregorian chant... Which are the first documented musical "notes"... But I'm sure the club / cave wall thing is in the history somewhere.

You have quite a grasp on all this.

The jazz mention was a good call. That said, maybe Louis Armstrong deserves recognition as one of the great influences of modern American music.

I had 2 semesters of "History of Music"... Actually one of the hardest classes I've ever taken... The professor was a stickler on a LOT of shit.

I'm just remembering the timeline.
