Been around the music industry along time and without a doubt the Beatles. Not enough credit is given to their producer though who was truly the 5th member. The things they did production wise with only a four track recorder is AMAZING!
the Beatles were amazing....their records still sell like hotcakes some 40 years later.,..and 40 year from now they will still be selling
Classic Rock- The Rolling StonesHard Rock- Led Zeppelin
Prog rock is a tough one, coz there you got Pink Floyd, Juthro Tull, Yes, not to mention quite a few others...
Beatles... Zep... However, even those guys were influenced by Chuck Berry, Elvis, etc... Who were influenced by Jazz, the blues, and Big Band stuff... who were influenced by folk music of the 19th century, who were influenced by classical composers.
... who were influenced by a guy named Grog, who rhythmically beat his club against a cave wall.
Well, most classical music came from ancient gregorian chant... Which are the first documented musical "notes"... But I'm sure the club / cave wall thing is in the history somewhere.
You have quite a grasp on all this. The jazz mention was a good call. That said, maybe Louis Armstrong deserves recognition as one of the great influences of modern American music.
I had 2 semesters of "History of Music"... Actually one of the hardest classes I've ever taken... The professor was a stickler on a LOT of shit.I'm just remembering the timeline.
