i do exfoliate before shaving. i also shave after a shower/bath, so the bristles are soft. 'the real shaving co' shaving cream, applied with a brush

Boar's lot - I typed the wrong thing above.

Boar brushes aren't that much; I think I paid about $13 for mine.
The two big differences among brushes are bristle stiffness and the amount of water they retain.
Badger is the softest and holds the most water.
Boar is bit stiffer, but I consider that a plus.
Boar also holds less water, but my brush design has very long bristles - much longer than often seen on shaving brushes, and I think that makes up for it.
