While that's true...it runs much deeper than that.  In the old days, there wasn't much incentive money wise...so almost everyone did it for the love of the game and a title...over the years, the opportunities to actually make a living from the sport has become a reality, and for many, this has provided the blueprint to try and asend  the top as soon as possible...often by using faster methods.

in the " old days" there was a unwritten rule about advancing to bigger shows where by you needed to progress up the ladder by actually WINNING. Local, state, regional, jr. Nat, national....I remember Paul DeMayo going back to the Jr. nationals 3-4 times because he felt if he couldn't win the overall, then he wasn't prepared to be at the National Level...very smart and very realistic at the same time.

Trey Brewer comes to mind as a kid who had a great start, and some good promise....but a contract too soon and a program made for a 10 year veteran, not a rank amateur...insured that he would never reach that potential and faded out into obscurity in record time....sad.  I'll never forget seeing Trey sitting at a table at a National show with a stack of 8X10's to autograph...when the only title he had was the NPC Excalibur...a LOCAL show...here he was signing autographs like a superstar, when in reality, he couldn't have placed in the top 10 at the show he was sitting at!

This isn't meant to disrespect Tre in any way, he was and is a good kid...but he was managed completly wrong and thrown to the wolves with delusions of grandeur...

times have changed...some for the better, some...not so much.  Some of the competitors need to realize that jus because you qualified to compete nationally, doesn't mean you SHOULD compete nationally...

This post is 100% spot on.

This is why I still appreciate Robert's input on the state of professional bodybuilding.  He knows the truth and can be a true beacon for these upcoming bodybuilders.

Some of you question Bob's motives and think that he is a company man, but fuck that noise (as a well respected homosexual on this forum would often say), because if it came down to your family's well being and your stupid reputation on an online forum, you too would pick the well being of your wife/husband and kids.

Bob is probably in a much better place now, where he is more capable of speaking the truth without the contractual limitations that could lead to potential monetary repercussions.

shit, and me thinking Trey had paid his dues, after all he did the customary gay pics that bob did (fireman, etc) and I am sure he stopped by the mirage

I guess somewhere somehow he was found missing. Bob had that problem at first but soon discovered how to pay his dues and get a well due master's win.

I hope all the heavy squating didnt ruin your back Bobby

well bug the question is: have u payed ur dues?

if u havent then bob says dont even try it. Do it the good old fashion way, ie, lick ass and dick, do a lot of squating, draw lines in the floor, and one day u will be ready for competing with the big boys

you seem to spend an awful lot of time making homosexual comments...even when the dialogue doesn't have anything to do with the subject, nor anyone else making similar comments...

Bob, and have you ever talked about this thing with the guys at the BSN? I mean for them Trey was still a good deal? Like "Hey kids buy the True Mass and Cell Mass and you're gonna be huge like this kid, Trey!"

Chick is spot on once again.

Half-assed pussified training, and cheating on "so called diets" are now the norm.

Of course. Pros of the past were actually into lifting weights and being strong, now pros and gym rats alike only care about artificial and synthetic muscle that comes from a bottle and dont even care about quality anymore. Its just a testament to how society has become, they want to completely skip the work and get right to the prize with as little effort as possible. People dont like working hard period.

How hard is it to get a contract?

You have to have something going that is of VALUE to the company first... like a good image, a freaky look, whatever will  help make them money.
Same with getting a great job and making alot of money.

The ad campaign wasn't a failure because he never won, or didn't turn pro....I just would have positioned it differently, not that he was the second coming...thus the subject at hand...that hard work and doing things with a long term outcome would have been a better plan, not rushing this kid through the  ranks...kind of the same when they move a young boxer up the ladder without really fighting anyone of significance, then he gets his ass handed t him when he faces a REAL contender...all a facade

Great post.

And if anyone disagrees with Chick on this, watch BFTO 2010. These guys don't even train properly. I see naturals (TRUE naturals) in the gym training 1000 times harder than these professional bodybuilders, albeit missing all the benefits of being on the juice.

Look at Arnold, Frank, Franco and all the others who were actually training their asses off, and they actually seem to have fun at what they were doing. Looking at today's pros, i see a bunch of lazy, dumb guys who want to make a quick buck by shooting a lot of drugs (not all of them though). They don't even seem to enjoy training at all, and when you read comments like Steve Namat's about not wanting to ruin his health and go through all that bullshit, you can see how wrong it is what's going on these days.
