Just returned from 7 days at the Secrets Maroma resort

It's an all inclusive high end resort in Playa Del Carmen Mexico. The food was very good, the beach amazing and the drinks plentiful. After 7 days of non stop eating and drinking I thought it would be a good idea to grab a Johnny Rocket burger at the Cancun Airport....

Fast forward 4 days and I'm 8 lbs down thanks for a bout of food poisoning. Couldn't have asked for better timing and an easy way to shed those extra unwanted pounds.. I should write a diet book that prescribes drinking and eating what you want, followed by a burger from a mexican fast food place.

If you google Secrets Maroma Beach there are a lot of pics. It was in Yahoo's recent article about the top 10 best all inclusive resorts. I had no complaints with the place whatsoever.

One of the pics is from our room balcony. We had the second floor. The 1st floors have a "swim out" pool which was pretty cool too.

last ones.... We did the ceremony on the beach at Sunset. It was pretty cool. Low stress wedding for sure.

I wouldn't be caught dead (pun intended) in several border towns, Mexico City, and a couple other places that are currently hotbeds for violence. But Cancun, Playa area is at this time very safe. Most resorts are in gated properties with armed guards at the gates. Playa's location in relation to the violence is like being in Texas and hearing about shootings in Detroit.

A friend of mine was down there recently and asked about all the "security" roaming the beach.  Someone told her it wasn't security, but the drug cartel who they said ran many of the resorts.

I never saw any security on the beach, but I've heard cartels launder money through the resorts though I don't know that for a fact.

You DID see the cartel when you were there. I came back from there in April. The police in brown uniforms basically make a living out of drugs and prostitution.  All set up so you have to bribe them. Absolutely beautiful place though. Did things there I've everyone in my life.100% recommended.

Could be, but there were people from London, Sweden, Germany, Japan etc there who probably could have went anywhere. There are cheaper places to stay around the area I was in, but this particular place was not all that cheap. I wouldn't stay there again unless I got a great deal as it was a bit too pricey for me overall. Could be I'm cheap  :D
