bodybuilders jumping the boat. mma new craze
« on: June 28, 2011, 02:51:15 AM »
seems people have grown tired of bb.

it was growing in popularity from the 70's to early 2000's i think

now I guess it's all been seen and done and everyone knows it's mostly a drug game. even the general public knows it.

more and more seems to be jumping the boat for mma.

Swede!

Screw being punched in the head for a pastime. Mate of mine who's been taking the piss out of me for lifting decided to take up martial arts a while back - anything potentially actually useful, like boxing, or krav, or even jkd or jujitsu? Nope. Fucking copeira.  ::)

Flabby sod can't get it through his head either that all the daft techniques in the world are moot if you run out of oxygen after 30 seconds and fall over blue in the face.  ;D

Insecure young men have always flocked to bodybuilding.  Now insecure young men are getting into MMA.  During the eighties bodybuilding gyms were packed with guys.  Now the gyms seem to be 60% female and 40% male by me.

If you really wanted to be a alpha male would you be injecting steroids, insulin, GH and oil injection to find out you couldn't kick a 150lbs. guy's ass?

When I see guys on this board make fun of a a guy's physique who is obviously in incredible shape it makes me laugh.  If they don't have steroid bloated muscles they disapprove.  What do you think would happen if no one knew GSP and he put on a pair of posing trunks?  The guys here would say his physique is terrible.  Here is one of the best conditioned athletes in the world.

Agree 100% you have to be just plain stupid to bother with capoeira, what a waste of energy, you see these morons with their flying twist kicks and summersaults heaving for air after 20 seconds, LOL

Capoeira can be useful, in the right circumstances. Plus, it provides balance, cardio (you ever seen a fat capoeiraista?), and flexibility that a MMA fighter doesn't have. You walk away with a good feeling, comradeire, and many of those movements you can use in bed...try using a rear naked chokehold on a chica and see if you get a callback.

That action is scripted for a movie, see the camera at 40 seconds on top right.

I missed that... it looked kind of played out when I saw it the first time anyway. I'm guessing the same thing would go down in real life though, capoeira guy would get knocked out.

exactly!
i started mma for fun, i did full contact karate when i was a teen.
after that just bodybuilding, got tired of competing, so i started some mma.
after just 2 months of training i could hang with all of them. only the good competitors still got me lol!
but the other recreants who were training longer then me, i could take them allready.
my professor told me size does matter!!
i am 6'2/6'3 and weigh 255.
even some 180 pound dude who can fight will have trouble with a 255 pound guy that has less skills.
why do you think they have weightclasses??????????

especially with the ground work they had trouble with me, because i am wide, makes it hard for them to get a hold of me.
i love mma, it keeps you in shape and is not that brutal.
when you compete yes, it is more brutal. but you can do it as a hobby...
and it's always nice to have some skills, it is a fucked world these days....
Be Happy,
Optimus

To think size and strength does not hugely aid a person engaging in altercation is pure and simply nonsense. Sure, these attributes don't suggest one specifically has fighting skill, but an individual with superior size and strength has a lot in his arsenal.

Let's call it as it is. A wimp's a wimp, no matter how big or small or strong or weak he might be.

If you're a non-wimp carrying over 250 pounds of relative muscular bodyweight and have functional strenth and power (and let's face it, most men like this who built their bodies entirely-or-mostly without drugs are not wimps), would decimate, as was said, 99.9 percent of males on the planet.

And I don't care who you are, if some MMA "champion" weighing less than 220 confronts a top-flight strength athlete towards 300 or more, he is gonna have his ass handed to him.

If you're 300 pounds, muscular, and have some fighting skill/experience, you're a wrecking machine, without doubt.

I do agree, thought, that MMA has usurped bodybuilding as the go-to physical activity of young, impressionable and scared young men.

this is actually on the true side. teach a childhood base wrestler and/or football guy how to box and he actually be semi good at boxing and he's one dangerous cat. All the other "arts" he can learn as he goes imo.

Beg to differ.....Manny Pacquaio in boxing would beat the shit out of a 240lb man.

Sure, if he can get shots off and make them count (i.e. knock Big Man the fuck out) before Big Man grabs the little fucker and starts bustin' stuff.

Boxing's a great skill to have, though, no question. Manny is a threat to anyone.

And this

To think size and strength does not hugely aid a person engaging in altercation is pure and simply nonsense. Sure, these attributes don't suggest one specifically has fighting skill, but an individual with superior size and strength has a lot in his arsenal.

Let's call it as it is. A wimp's a wimp, no matter how big or small or strong or weak he might be.

I do agree, thought, that MMA has usurped bodybuilding as the go-to physical activity of young, impressionable and scared young men.

Adding my 0,02, IMHO both sports are excelent and they can indeed coexist. Problem is, the majority of people engage in them practices for all the wrong reasons. They want to be certificate tuff guys. Specially in bodybuilding's case.

Bodybuilding takes a bad rep due to all the homoerotic activities some 'pros' and 'athletes' get involved with, thus extending the bad name to the sport, in an unfair way. Add to this the drugs and the 'industry' and there you have it: a train wreck unstoppable machine.

Bodybuilding done in a sane manner, not necessarily meant as a competitive sport, but to the exact point of the meaning of the word - bodybuilding, that is, to phisically build your body via weight lifting - is the single best sport ever created on Earth, period. I don't care what you think. A fact is a fact.

And MMA, by the same token, is a very complete sport, and can indeed be a healthy one. The problems arise when the athlete wants to pursue the competitive side of it. Like in any competitive sport, health has NOTHING to do with it. Elite athletes of any competitive sport are very aware of that. Health has never been their main concern. The trophy and the accompanying pay check are.  ;)

Having said that, both sports when undertook by imature people as a means to cure their insecurities initiate the downward spiral for them.
Train forever !
