Hammer Strength machines are definitely the best for chest development. I don't like the Smith's straight up and down motion and the angled one's feel even worse.

if you also watch jay's favorite chest exercise if the incline hammer.. that is his main exercise.. for athletics i agree that free weights are best.. for bodybuilding free weights do have certain limitations.. i have yet to get as good a chest workout using free weights as i have using hammer strength machines properly.. (proper seat height ect as opposed to just trying to lift as much as possible and adjusting the seat to that advantage) i have lifted for 20 years.. and wish hammer and some of the other leverage lines were in existance 20 years or more a go in my area.. would be ahead of the game i am at now..

impressive posting,, right on the money

One of the biggest problems with HS football is that a coach, be it, O-line, D-line, head coach, etc is usually the strength and conditioning coach. HS's usually do not use a strength and conditioning coach for the sole purpose of creating strength and conditioning programs because it's usually not in the budget or stipen. But the HS coaches are not strength and conditioning coaches but they try to do the best they can with what they have.
I get angry when i think of my highschool coaches because they are probably the least credible people to rely on in terms of exercise. Bunch of fat bald old men yelling at you. My defensive back coach was a GOOD coach and actually had a big influence on me moving into bodybuilding. Nothing was ever good enough for the guy. You could pick the ball off and lay out everyone on the field and run into the endzone with it and he would ask you why you didn't do it faster. He really destroyed some egos.

there is no need for free weight to build great chest,, this is one of the secrets we dont tell you ,, jason myself many others we use machines and smith and hammers!! to get to the level of pec development we achieved,, again this is one of the myths you hear about free weights and dumbells for chest,, BIG NO NO ,, you build big chest from stimulating it with right training not ego training,, and ofcourse heavier weight the better but! you need to do it right and get the stiulation ,, free weight doesnt achieve that to full capacity

Great post. The idea is to stimulate the muscle, not take a silly ego based risk of injury.

I like them both.

Here`s my tip of the day for added upper pec growth:

When doing Smith Inclines,do a full rep, followed by a half rep...........this counts as one rep.

Try a 4-5 sets of 6-12 reps,on a 20-30 degree incline,no higher,and thank me later!
 8)

after the set you can also do 1/8 ROM reps like 30 of them

After a set,I can barely move.......these fuckers are painful.

Just another way to increase time under tension and extend the set.

My HS track coach had the sprinters doing pyramids (100,200,400, etc) instead of sprint a strength work...he looked at me funny when I wanted to go squat and strengthen my quads and hams.

Free weights, smiths, hammers and even machines, all good but I'll have to agree with Mr. 15 on this one, you don't need a lot free weights for a big chest. IMO, best chest exercise is Incline Smith Machine Press. As for free weights my favorite chest exercise is DB Incline Fly.

We have hammer strength equipment. I use the incline hammer press sometimes, I never feel like I'm really isolating my pecs. I feel it more in my shoulders. Wonder what I'm doing wrong  ???

Would choose hammer strength over a smith (injury machine) machine anyday.

As much as I'm against machines, I will use a hammer strength for some upper bodywork. Even thought the hammer stabilizes too much, its the only machine I've used that takes the stress off my shoulder with more emphasis on the triceps.

I realize this is a post from a bit back but was curious as to where most people position the handles in relation to your chest. Do you start with it lined up with the middle of your chest or line it up with the upper chest or even higher towards the clavicle?
Would help if a vid could be posted. I am always a bit confused as to where to place the handles, etc.

Disagree, causes too much stability in the shoulders plus if you get pinned you have no where to go. DB's allow more instability that in turn causes stability which makes stabilizers stronger to handle the load. Plus you can't get pinned, if you get in trouble....drop em'. DB press for chest, with a 1/4 turn at the top makes for a better contraction (in bodybuilding terms). Training on a machine makes you better............

.....on a machine!

1/4 turn at the top- turning hands in I assume?

that may be true, but i am drug free at the moment and want to improve my chest as much as possible, so i am looking for the most effective exercises.

i used to do a lot of flat benches, but in the past 4-5 months, i dropped the bench and have been doing a lot of dumbells.  i used to do 6 reps, but i also dropped the weight and hit 10-12 reps, and feel like this has help a lot.  its easy to drop the weight, but hard to drop the ego.

Then don't ask gh15 for advice.
