As soon as Martin becomes aware of the gun, he has legitimate reason to fear for, and to fight for, his life.

Would anyone challenge this?

He wouldn't have known who Zimmerman was.  All the kid knew was some guy was coming at him with a gun and it wasn't a cop.  Anybody would have gone into self defense mode.

I see everyone is still arguing based on their emotions on the subject. Carry on.

I disagree... I think it's a good idea of what the jury will be thinking of.

It would explain a lot about this case.

in Florida, if trayvon was 21, he would have been justified in lying prone in the ditch and shooting zimm full of bullets when his ass came around the corner.  A big fat man chasing you through the dark for 2 blocks... yes, you sure as @#^*& SHOULD be in fear for your life.  You don't have to wait for the fat man to actually shoot you... Ya can cap him first.

Trayvon could have hit him with a brick - out of fear of his life - and that'd been fine too.

Trayvon's mistake here was using fists when he should have been using a deadlier weapon to protect himself against the man violating his consitutional rights in a very scary manner.

Just imagine how pissed any of us would be - if we did ZERO wrong, and some big fat hero wanna be decided to chase us 2 blocks with a gun cause he didn't like our appearance - how pissed and terrified would we be?

This will be the crux of the prosecutions case.  Doesn't matter what Martin did previously or whether he posted thug images on Facebook. Zimmerman didn't know any of that anyway so it's irrelevant.  Martin was approached by a stranger with a gun and was fighting for his life.

Trayvon should have armed himself.

Let that be a lesson to all teenagers in america.

For safety never go out without firepower.

I'm glad we've determined (using the substantial amount of evidence available to us as getbig detectives) that Zimmerman was chasing that poor Trayvon with his gun out in plain view, and that we know for a fact that Travyon was running scared for his life. Should make this case a lot easier for the prosecution.

It's a matter of Martin simply becoming aware of the gun.  Period.

And if he only became aware of the gun after he had already engaged Zimmerman?

I'd say this is exactly what is being asked.

Fair enough. My point was that people were arguing like it was fact that Zimmerman was running this kid down with his gun out *cough* Rob *cough*.

How likely is it Zimmerman would want Martin to become aware of the gun, and to have him become aware of it as early as possible in the encounter?

I can't speak for him, but I know that I personally don't want anyone to become aware of my firearm until I'm ready to use it. And I'm not going to use it unless I intend to kill someone.

think about the type of man that called 911 because of potholes and because garages were left open.

think about the type of man that carries a gun while working neighborhood watch.

previous assault felony charge on law enforcement, previous problems with alcohol, domestic abuse charge...

sounds like the type of hotshot who woudl'nt walk into a fight without a gun very clear.

Do you think a typical person would be more likely to abandon the thought of making aggressive movements if he were under the threat of being shot?

Depends on the type of person. I know some people that will head right for the guy pointing the gun at them (I've witnessed this a couple times actually), and some that would run screaming, and some that would literally just freeze up in fear.

I'm not doing this again with you Rob. You're taking shots in the dark, and that's fine, but don't try and pass your leaps of logic off as facts.

Just to put things clear, so we don't get off track, we're temporarily setting aside any possibility that Martin would have likely become aware of the gun through means other than Zimmerman purposely making him aware of it.

Depends on the type of person. I know some people that will head right for the guy pointing the gun at them (I've witnessed this a couple times actually), and some that would run screaming, and some that would literally just freeze up in fear.

Myself, I'd say it is widely held that a person's behavior would be more easily manipulated if that person were under the direction of someone with a gun, versus someone without a gun.

Given Zimmerman's apparent objective at that time, and conceivably far more so in a direct encounter, it would seem to be consistent with a strong desire to direct Martin's behavior.
