The sauna is a Big part of finnish culture for example.. Not like a sauna to americans.. :) also a part of russian culture If in not misstaken.
And each family probably always had that one tough guy in the family that always could endure more heat then everyone else. So they decided to compete.

Fart is a smell.. a sauna is Pain.. So its who can take the most pain.. =)
