The climate has changed. It's true there has been an element of nastiness in politics throughout our history, but that was the exception, not the rule. You should read up on the Lincoln/Douglas debates. There were some personal attacks, but by and large they talked about the issues, and it involved arguably the most controversial issue in American history.

Things really started to spiral during the Clinton years. Do you remember the Clinton Chronicles? A "documentary" accusing Clinton of murdering opponents? There is an article from about 2000 where a guy (and not some crazy nut) wrote an article claiming Bill Clinton was the Anti-Christ.

I have definitely seen a trend the past twenty years.

You're going to compare past candidate debates to what is said on today's message boards lol? How about you go back and look at the stuff that was published, some it got pretty mean in what was suggested. Some of the cartoons got pretty nasty too. whole books were publish to spew dirt against a candidate or president. Plus they were able to get away with complete lies easier back then. Lincoln was called the devil, an anti-christ and all that too.

I'm talking about degree and frequency. Also, as I mentioned a minute ago, the information age has changed things. Online news, tabloid, websites, blogs, etc.

I created a left-wing hate speech thread that has numerous examples of how people are demonized because they have a different political viewpoint.

What's funny is I was just discussing this issue with an Obama-bot the other day. She actually told me that the "vitriol" directed against Obama is unprecedented. I was trying to give her examples of what happened with Clinton and Bush II, but it didn't go very well. lol . . .

I think she has been pretty consistent. Not perfect, but consistent. I'm not excited about anyone in the race, although I like what I read about Perry's background today.

yes and thanks to the way information travels today the impact of lies and attacks is less. People can respond right away. Back then when something was published and circulated, it wasn't so easy to defend against. The shit flew plenty back then. It's odd that you think it was less. Well there were a lot less people so it was probably less in that regard, that's not much of a defense.
