Lots of truth there. While I was admittedly somewhat 'down with the Queen' and did watch many episodes of 'Different World', those characters ended up having *way* too much influence over the black students on white college campuses across the South. 

I can't say anything about what was going on at black schools like Spelman or Morehouse during that time, but at State, Carolina, Duke, etc., we ended up with a bunch of Freddie and Shazza wannabes.

Even my own sister - who was raised in a proper household (the same one that produced me, in fact  ) - became one of 'them' over at UNC.  She consistently marries herself to a position and establishes her talking points before even listening to the entirety of what she intends to argue against.

Not even close - we're talking about a completely different social species. 

My mother and grandmothers weren't raised on television.  I love assertive, career-driven women.  After getting her degree, my grandmother chose a career in education, because it would allow her to influence the next generation AND because that's what was available to her.  My mother chose a career in state government, because that was the best opportunity available to her.  They worked and they raised families.

What I was referring to in my earlier post is that generation of black women who were conditioned into some false sense of self-OVERimportance and also to believe that black men were essentially worthless...and who'd give you the 'stats' to prove it!  What so many failed to realize is that those pervasive attitudes did a lot of damage to Black society - and also to AMERICAN society - and we're seeing the fruits of that now with more and more black males being systematically removed from the workforce.
