Iran 'discreetly aided Libyan rebels'

TEHRAN — Iran "discreetly" provided humanitarian aid to Libyan rebels before the fall of Tripoli, Jam-e-Jam newspaper quoted Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi on Sunday as saying.

"We were in touch with many of the rebel groups in Libya before the fall of (Moamer) Kadhafi, and discreetly dispatched three or four food and medical consignments to Benghazi," Salehi told the daily.
"The head of the National Transitional Council (NTC), Mustafa Abdel Jalil, sent a letter of thanks to President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for having been on their side and helping," he added.

Since the Libyan uprising erupted in mid-February, Iran has adopted a dual approach -- criticising the Kadhafi regime for its violent assaults on the rebels while at the same time condemning NATO's military intervention.

On Tuesday, Iran "congratulated the Muslim people of Libya" after rebels overran the capital Tripoli, but it has so far distanced itself from officially recognising the NTC.

Like I said in my previous post, I'm not asking for much just some critical thinking. You sound like a child with little understanding of anything. Just a lot of "yeah! that evil dictator was a bad man and he didn't give money to his people and treated them like a big meanie so we went "BLAM BLAM" and killed him dead!"

Critical thinking?..okay..lets try some.....we and NATO by extension have always toppled dictators...from world war II until today....Reagan invaded Grenada....Bush I toppled Manuel Noriega of Panama.....Clinton removed Milosevic from Yugoslavia.....BusH II removed the Taliban from Afghanistan and Saddam from Iraq....and now Obama has done the same with Libya......it has always been an unofficual policy of the U.S. to remove tyrants...regardless of whether you like it or not..the U.S. cannot stand idly by when dictators begin to slaughter their own people....the U.S. is the biggest supporter of human rights in the world...how can it just sit on the sidelines watching while people are killed...it just would not go over well with the world community and with the people here as well....

yes the U.S. doesn't know the rebels very well but we have been meeting with them covertly and I'm sure Clinton and Obama are comfortable with who they are and so are France and Britain...Many of the people in the rebel leadership were educated in the U.S.....as a matter of fact, the top three leaders were all educated at U.S. universities...this is a good opportunity to have tremendous influence in Libya since all of the top leadership is familiar with the U.S. in that they have lived here, been educated here and have an idea of of how westerners think and how our society functions based on human rights and law and order...

Libya was not arbitrarily attacked as you put it....Gaddafi tried to murder his way into staying in power..the U.S. and France and Britain decided to act...with the go ahead of the UN I might add....so again...Obama did the right thing....with little loss of treasure , no loss of blood and did something that many U.S. presidents have been unable to do...get our "allies" to actually get off their asses and fight!...As for your putdown that Obama was leading from behind..its so funny that you and others on here were so willing to pin this whole thing on Obama when it appeared the libyan conflict could turn into a disaster, but now that he has been proven right and is victorious now all of a sudden he is "leading from behind"...BY NOT BEING OUT FRONT, OBAMA SAVED THE U.S FROM THE CRITICISM WHICH IT WOULD NORMALLY GET FOR BEING "AN IMPERIALIST POWER BENT ON TAKING OVER MIDEAST OIL AND KILLING MUSLIMS"..Obama was a genius on this matter

We have also supported many dictators who oppressed their people and in other instances did nothing while genocide and mass murder was being committed like the 1 million people killed by Pol Pot.

Tripoli, Libya (CNN) -- Tripoli's 2 million residents faced increasingly dire shortages of food and water Tuesday as rebels estimated the number of people killed during the past six months to be at least 50,000.

"I cannot overstate the urgency of this moment," U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said. "Time is of the essence." Ban said his goal was to get U.N. personnel on the ground "as quickly as possible."

Sixty percent of Tripoli was without water or sanitation, Ban said.

The European Union said Gadhafi forces had closed water-pumping stations in Jebel Hassouna along the route from Tripoli to Sabha while fleeing the capital. The resulting disruption of the water supply in Tripoli is "a major issue," an EU spokeswoman said, adding that security concerns along the road to the stations made it impossible to predict when the flow could be restored.

What evidence do we have that he was murdering his people. We have plenty that they are in Syria. This will go bad...as it always does. The fact that they were educated here means nothing. Your knowledge of how the world works is about paper thin....oh and Clinton and Obama feeling comfortable, are fucking serious.
