R.I.P. Art Atwood - 09-11-11
« on: September 11, 2011, 10:16:21 PM »
From Aaron Singerman

Art Dale Atwood died today in Dallas, Texas. He was 37 years old. The circumstances of his death are still unclear. Although, there have been several sources that have said that Art was at a pool party and fell or jumped in. When he was pulled out by fellow party goes he was already blue and wasn't able to be resuscitated. Untill the autopsy is preformed, we can't know if any substances or alcohol was envolved.

Art won his IFBB pro card at the 2001 NPC Nationals in Atlanta, Georgia. His professional bodybuilding debut was the 2001 Toronto Pro where he took 1st place. His first IFBB Mr. Olympia came in 2002, where he placed 12th. Art competed in 19 shows as a pro bodybuilder, and retired from the stage in 2006. Atwood was arrested in 2008 in connection to Operation Raw Deal. His arrest was also tied in with the arrest of David Jacobs, who later killed IFBB Fitness Pro Amanda Savell and then turned the gun on himself.

Since his arrest Art started Professional Supplements (http://www.professionalsupplements.net/) and was responsible for bringing Vitargo to the United States. Professional Supplements and Atwood’s main product, Karbolyn, have become very popular and the growth of his company and his reputation as a businessman have surged. He also became highly regarded as a contest prep coach, helping IFBB Pro Steve Kuclo, IFBB Pro Jason Huh, and many others. Art also ran and owned a nutrition store and tanning salon called, Results Dallas.

Art Atwood was one of the first IFBB Pro bodybuilders I was fortunate enough to have an extended conversation with. When we met, I was surprised by his modesty, honesty, and the friendly manner in which he spoke to me... A regular fan. Since our first meeting, Art reinforced those initial impressions every time we had a chance to interact. Art’s death is a horrible loss for his family, friends, and the bodybuilding world as a whole. He will be missed.

Wow. Very sad to hear.  We were supposed to meet Art and Steven (his sales manager) in Vegas in a few days to go over Professional Supplements and the line (we carry it).  Known Art for quite a few years.  Rest in Peace.  Has to be more to this.

He was the opposite of Nasser in a way - looked big but blocky and unimpressive (shape-wise) from the front, but huge and freaky in the back poses. Will Harris is supposed to have a big back and he looks small compared to Atwood there.

Those pics are freaky - Luke and Art gone within the space of a month (and the other is an immortal vampire ::))

Wow, to think these two died weeks apart. And how strange that Art died on 9/11.

Ok./may be true. But this is becoming a pattern, and I hate seeing people die for no good reason. If you guys think this makes me an idiot, fine.

and why is that? many of us are retired and healthy. we lose few clowns along the way until homeostasis is restored. the circle of life.

Yes, it is unfortunate that it is 2 deaths in one month, but besides that, people die, nothing to do about it.

Drowning deaths do happen to able-bodied people though.  A friend of mine who was only 21 passed away in July.  Because it was on the weekend of Canada Day and because he was an outdoors type and proficient swimmer I immediately assumed his drowning could have been alcohol related.  As it turned out, he dived and hit his head on a rock and while unconscious underwater, drowned.  You know it's a bit chilling when you hear a friend has died and have no idea why until hours or days after the fact.  I had lost touch a little over the past year and saw him last the week after the Arnold Classic.  He was in great health then.  It really makes me wonder when my time could be up.  I was also planning on seeing him again but put it off.  His death was a sad reminder of why keeping in touch is a good thing.

He was the opposite of Nasser in a way - looked big but blocky and unimpressive (shape-wise) from the front, but huge and freaky in the back poses. Will Harris is supposed to have a big back and he looks small compared to Atwood there.

Good call on the Nasser [inverse] comparison.  Nasser El Atwood would win the Olympia!

If the details are correct, Art's death could simply be an accidental drowning and unrelated to the industry.  That said, we are now finally at the time where we will slowly begin to see the effects of professional bodybuilding during the chemical era on its participants.  We already know the results of the seventies and eighties where there was massive steroid use but little or no GH/insulin/IGF-1 use.  Bodybuilding post-Lee Haney is a different animal though.
