It has to be light so that it can be easily moved swiftly to another location if needed.  That's why I'm going to try a number of different types of homesteads.  I've already done the cabin which I liked so I'm going to do the tent and yurt next.  This also allows me to learn about the benefits and downsides so that when the decision is made, I am prepared for it

Way to go Vince!!! Keep us informed about how it's going.

Big Update....

Finally decided on getting a yurt for the off grid homestead, however instead of a traditional Mongolian one, I'm going to modify it with a mold resistant fabric and reflective insulation.  With about 5 people, it can be completely set up within a day minus building the deck

Originally I had some issues with the building codes but they've recently changed in North Carolina where its no longer an issue so I'm going to go back to the Yurt....I liked it better than the cabin anyway

The estimate for a contractor to build a 365 SQ FT house was $75,000.  WTF?

Cool stuff but way over priced if you can't build it all yourself.

Way too small and too expensive although I respect his work.  If I was going to travel, then I would go ahead and buy an RV.  I can get a 20-30 ft yurt for under 10k and with the use of reflective insulation and mold free plastic, it would be as durable and flexible as a convential house without the cost.

If you ever watch the show, Bering Sea gold, a few of those people live in yurts, and they seem to hold up to those weather conditions well. I'm sure being in NC, you'll be fine with one.

I hope it isn't his plan that makes you ask that.  It is an excellent idea.

I actually bought the book. Okay for inspiration, though I get better space-saving ideas from Japanese architecture. So save your money.

Exactly. Even with Dutch lumber prices being ridiculously high, I could build it for a quarter of that without sacrificing any quality.

Then again: with land prices over here, the other 56,000 would be going to the city for buying enough land to put it on... ::)

why not just buy a boat and live in the keys or on the gulf coast of florida?

you'll be off the grid, you'll have a means of transportation to tour around the caribbean and it will prolly cost you as much as your yurt or whatever the fuck it is.

you can provision a boat for months away from shore. you cant take a home with you.
