My teacher in 4th grade I think (I was 9 or so) used to smoke in the classroom, one after the other. He did open up a small window, though. Today a teach who would do that would be hanged from the nearest tree...

or is it: hung from the nearest tree ?
Ha! Had a prof in uni, who smoked like a chimney long after he was told he couldn't do so in his office. He was Dutch, too. His last name was Vreeken, so we called him 'Freakin' Vreeken.' Good guy.    ;D

I remember we got our first COLOUR TV SET !!

I remember the first time I saw television, probably around 1950 or 1953 when I was seven. I remember the first time I bought a color television.

Obviously, you are getting so "old" that you tend to confuse what is real from what you've seen in the movies....although the Titanic did sink on April 10, 1912, which would mean that you'd have to be at least 99 years old to actually remember this. And what a wise baby you must have been. Most infants are too busy thinking about their next meal or their poopy diapers even care about world events. However, if you are 99 years old,  you're doing great still posting on Internet blogs. LOL!

When I couldn't wait until Sunday because the Ed Sullivan show was featuring Ike and Tina Turner. Hmmm, savage black woman in mini skirt. Schwing!

Speaking of old events, if I'm not mistaken the last known veteran(worldwide) from WWI died not too long ago.

EDIT: Yep

I wonder what it feels like to be that old. Everyone you loved and cared for in the first half of your life are most likely gone and long forgotten.. if you're 111 years old and remember the stuff that happened in your twenties.. do you even feel like the same person? Do you still miss the friends you had 80 years ago?

The oldest person ever(confirmed at least), lived to be 122 years old

Health and lifestyle

Calment's remarkable health presaged her later record. At age 85, she took up fencing, and continued to ride her bicycle up until her 100th birthday. She was reportedly neither athletic, nor fanatical about her health.[9] Calment lived on her own until shortly before her 110th birthday, when it was decided that she needed to be moved to a nursing home after a cooking accident (she was having complications with sight) started a small fire in her flat. However, Calment was still in good shape, and was able to walk until she fractured her femur during a fall at age 114 years and 11 months, which required surgery.[3][14] After her operation, Calment needed to use a wheelchair. She weighed 45 kilograms (99 lb) in 1994.[15] Calment became ill with influenza shortly before her 116th birthday.[16] She smoked until the age of 117, only five years before her death.[1][16] Calment smoked from the age of 21 (1896), though according to an unspecified source, she smoked no more than two cigarettes per day.[17]

She ascribed her longevity and relatively youthful appearance for her age to olive oil, which she said she poured on all her food[4] and rubbed onto her skin, as well as a diet of port wine, and ate nearly one kilo of chocolate every week.[11]

ROFL!

Yes. My parents watched Ed Sullivan on Sunday nights also. Unlike folks today, my parents house had one television and it was in the living room. I watched the television shows my parents picked out to watch. Presently, there are three adults and one teenager living in our house. Altogether, we have five televisions scattered though various rooms. Oh the excess!

Yep, I grew in an era of one car one TV. I recently read that today there are more TVs in the average household than there are people. One of the biggest mistakes I think  parent can make is allowing a teenager to have a TV in his room. In fact, I don't think they should even have a computer in their room.

Pellius,

Jezebelle and I do not own a Television at all.  We refuse to get one.  However, we are building a dedicated home theater to watch movies, play video games, youtube.

Perhaps you are right. Until our daughter, her husband and son moved in with us, we only had one television. (Our daughter and grandson are living with us while  dad is deployed to Afghanistan). All the while our two children were growing up, we had one television. Our son was an avid reader and watched very little television. However, our grandson is also an avid reader, a honors student and very into soccer, so he is very well rounded. I don't know when he has time to turn on the television in his room.

It seems crazy that besides having five televisions, we also have three computers hooked up and working. It goes without saying that our electric bill is large. Oh and we have two land lines and each of us has a cell phone too. We are totally connected....as if we were that important! Ha, ha. With three adults we also have three cars....this is beginning to sound like wretched excess.

I respect that.

If you had to go to from one extreme to another, I believe if you are raising kids it would be better not to have a TV in the house. But if you do there should be strict limitations. It should only be on to view specific previously approved and planned out programs. None of this perpetual 24 hour a day TV blasting. People have it on even when they are not watching it. They just like the mindless chatter. TV, MTV, has really been one of the causes for the down fall of our culture. Not only do people, especially kids, not read books. They are simply unable to because their attention span and ability to focus and concentrate has been so compromised by TV.

I'm not saying it's all bad. Rarely are things all bad. But I believe it has been mostly bad. Do families even sit at the dinner table anymore? Unless it's Thanksgiving seems like everyone eats in front of the TV.
