So, Melvin Anthony, I wonder what you are thinking right now?
« on: September 20, 2011, 03:22:07 PM »
Melvin Anthony was hailed as the second coming of Flex Wheeler---same shape, smaller waist, 5'8, one of craziest BDB tapers in the business. Great poser. Has one arm that has the Coleman double peak. But, sadly, had Flex's trouble areas, lower back, glutes and hams were harder to get conditioned, especially at higher bodyweights. Dex had told him to stop trying to compete at higher bodyweights. He didn't listen. Also, he didn't take the dieting serious enough nor training calves)

So now what happens? A dude who is 5'9, an amalgam of Flex and Levrone comes on the scene in 2006, gets his conditioning down pat and slowly adds weight, and is CONSISTENT. And now is the Mr. O.

This is lesson for the genetically gifted, if your ass doesn't take getting in conditioning as serious as you do your pop-locking posing, you gets NOWHERE!

Okay, he did place 5th at th O in 2005 And won the NY Pro, but he could have had a couple ACs, Ironmans, and possibly even 2nd place at the O or even win it.

he didn't have the mental discipline. relied on his genetics too much

Then you have a guy like Jay who could diet 24 weeks if he had to without blinking, Phil is the same way

I got really conditionned ONCE, at the ASC

he was lean but he looked really bad I think it was in 2006

looked lanky

his best showing was at the Olympia where he placed 5th or 6th I think

You answered your own question.

Melvin = lacks so much, not all physical related entirely, but mental.

Phil = combo of levrone, and flex, mentality of a jay cutler, no known weaknesses aside from width ::)

Gifted genetics plus determination = champion ala Mr Olympia Phil Heath

Melvin Anthony had the bad luck of turning pro at the time of Ronnie Coleman beginning his Mr Olympia run.  Everyone was playing the size game...Cutler, Dexter, Kamali, etc.  Melvin eventually realized that he wasn't going to become Mr O so he did other things such as go to Bible College, get a diploma in Cosmotology, etc.

I think he's also now selling some sort of cleansing juice or something but to his credit, at least he has an education to fall back on...something that a lot of pros don't have.

dude didnt have great genetics imo

flat arms
soft
thick skin
small frame wise

all he had going for him was a small waist and even that grew as he grew in size

Phil won for the same reason Dexter won....Jay was off by a mile and Jay never won the Mr Olympia until Ronnie got injured and came in less than great shape.  If Phil was competing in the era of Ronnie Coleman when he was dominant, he would have gotten destroyed.

That's why Ronnie was on Leno and Cutler and Dexter have not been

I think Aaron Baker was better than Melvin. Certainly came more consistently in sharp condition and had that Flex Wheeler-like shape.

Quite true

actually he had great arms, full and round. And one had a double biceps peak, like Ronnie Coleman's arms

he was in the same vein as Brian Buchanan and Flex, and JoJo, they are cut from the same cloth. In fact, Melvin's lack of quad sweep, or flattish quads when over dieted are just like Brian Buchanan. He was the closest thing to Brian.

Mes, he was 5'8, as when him and Jay and a few others of that height have been compared, they are the same height, and he is taller than Dex.

Wasnt there something about him telling Milos about him cheating on his diet and saying he'd still make a top spot---bragging about eating junk food (Juan Morel, anyone?)

He did, unfortunately he had the misfortune of competing against folks like Haney, Dorian, Shawn Ray, Flex, Levrone, Lebrada, Momo, etc.  There were so many stage killers in the 90's that it didn't leave much room for someone like Aaron.

It might of been 2005 but I think it was 2007 mr.O  melvin anthony just looked insane! Hee had it all going on for him. had put on at leaast 10-15 pds of quality dense muscle. If he stepped it up from that showing another 10 pds he would of had a sandow. for awhile melvin Anthony looked just insane! almost flawless!

I used to think Clairmont and Bob Paris had the perfect physiques...

Even Frank Zane... when standing relaxed ~ he just had a great look. If I had to choose between Zane and Arnold (esque) physiques for myself, it would be a tough call, but, unfortunately I am short, so I would probably look more like Tito's little brother (I can't believe he wasn't second to Flex in the 202's)

2005, he worked with Chad, and he had a noticable gut as well...
Due to him having a genetically small waist, the gut is hard to keep down. He needed to heed Dex's advice and not try to coming in around 235-245, as his frame is built differently. 225-231 is good for him, then slowly, and in increments gain weight, a la Shawn Ray and Phil Heath.

Preach and live off of light skinned women...
There was some (Vietnamese?) restaurant owner that he was hooked up with right after his marriage ended...

To me, might as well quit, and open up a a church for the spiritual cleansing of bbers...

At that church; Melvin would be the pastor. The ushers would be Flex, Shawn, Ronnie, and Michael Francios.

True, he could always pop and lock and sing at a church.

What happened to his marriage?? He's divorced now??

I remember when I was at powerhouse, chatsworth in 04/05 and saw Melvin training there with Stan Mcquay. Great physique and cute girl. I think he was working with Pano at the time for his prep before moving out of the valley.

Remember he married that Peruvian chick just after he broke up with Bea...I said on here it wouldn't last 5 yrs...Ron chastised me...
Well, they broke up abruptly, like in 2009-2010, then he was pictured with some Asian lady who owns a restaurant---hmmmm

yeah, great physique, although he has that Big Head look to him.
I have his first DVD, actually it came out as as VHS in 99, 2000. It was a follow thru of how he got his apro card at the 99 USA's, he never looked better. Dude had the goods that night.

Well, he better start competiting again if he wants to win small shows. If he had problems with conditioning in the past it's not going to be any easier. He's 40 now or pretty close.... Time is ticking
