kids do need rules and discipline but they also need freedom of expression. its the kids who commit suicide because of bullying that really needed better parenting. the kids doig the bullying ought to have been taught better as well, but i bet you they would commit suicide if the tables were turned. its a sign of extreme emotional weakness to let the words of others affect you so, and parents should be fostering strength and confidence from a very young age.

what your arguing for is simply impractical. where would you draw the line? how could a judge or police officer decide what is an insult and what is just constructive criticism? at what point does it become harrassment? what about playful teasing not meant to be hurtful? see, even if it made sense to put a ban on hateful speech, your already faced with a multitude of roadblocks in the enforcement os such a ban.  it owuld be literally impossible to define and ineffective as a result.    what you need to be arguing for is better parenting, both for the bullies and for the emotionally weak/sensitive.  kids should understand to love and respect one another, but they also need to understand that life isnt fair, bad shit happens, and no matter what anyone says or does to you you have to remain on the positive track. if you wanted to mandate school programs that taught about morality and life lessons, i would be all for that. we definitely do need society as a whole to play a larger more beneficial role in the development of our youth.  parents have proven themselves incapable of preparing their children for the world.

funny, the ruling on prop 8(overturned the constitutional amendment banning gay marriage) was challenged because the judge who presided over the case was gay himsellf. there wasnt a an educated person in the entire judicial system who felt there was any argument to be made. the ruling stands. a precedent had been established long ago.. black judges allowed to decide cases on discrimination and segregation, women allowed to judge feminist movement cases..etc.
