I DONT GET IT...where is his pants gone?

if he had a jacket and tie and hat, then he'd have pants, right?

did he take them completely off?!- and in that case, why?!

What do you mean ?  If I had legs like that I wouldn't wear pants either.... 8)

Looks like a used-car salesman.

"Platz now lives in Scottsdale, Arizona, on the TPC golf course, and supplements his income working as a salesman at Airpark Chrysler Jeep"

Max Headroom was a fictional character played by Matt Frewer (Jack in the Box).

He was supposedly computer Generated,...only the background was computer generated.

He wore a latex rubber costume and makeup that gave him that appearance,...They placed him in front of a green screen and matted in the computer generated back ground,...The video that carried his image was digitally altered and held on every third frame.  Max Headroom could be created in real time.

This is more like several years old.

Platz is a good guy. Got to know him quite well back in my MuscleMag days. Spent a few days out in Venice with him when he was pushing the Big Beyond Belief stuff. We trained, ate, drove around, etc.

The thing with Tom is, he's VERY passionate when he speaks. One time Tom and me were eating at The Keg Mansion in Toronto and got around to talking about training/squatting. His eyes bulged and he got so intense it started to frighten the other diners (ha, ha).

It's unfortunate, but time has largely forgotten abot Tom Platz. Seems to be the fate of many ex-BB champions. Especially those who don't win the Olympia. (But even them, too. Dickerson, anyone? Cutler ain't gonna be remembered much, either, I don't think.)

To this day, few can claim to be as natural a squatter as was Tom. He told me once that had he focussed solely on maximum poundage, he believe he could have squatted 1,000. I believe it. Something like a month before the '85 Olympia he hit a set of 12 with 635. And this is pure Olympic style and with zero equipment, save for a belt.

He told me he didn't like to venture above 700 much for fear of injury, but on any given day, at his best, he could EASILY hit sets of 10 with 600. And his reps were always ass-to-grass.

I wish him well in life, He always treated me with respect and friendliness.

Mr. Fortney (I forgot your first name),

That's a hell of a testimonial because I know you're a straight-shooter.  I never met Tom, but I did know Mike Mentzer.  He told me Tom's training was unreal leading up to the '81 Olympia (or was that '82?  Can't remember).  The focus, passion and drive ... I wish I could recapture some of that right about now  :o

I also don't understand why he doesn't get more "props" for his upper body.  His arms weren't spectacular, true, but he had great, strong-looking abs, an outstanding rear double-biceps and pecs with deep striations from one insertion point to the other.

Rob, dude.

Tom is one of the greats.

I only met Mike one time and he was, how shall I say, less than how I had imagined him to be? But he was friendly, regardless.

Rob, of course!  (Sean.  Nice to meet ya.)

The years haven't been kind to my memory.  Around the same time you worked for MuscleMag, there was a big, bald NPC guy named Allen Fortney, who also called himself "the Fortress."  I knew you weren't him -- as I recall, you were more into powerlifting -- but the "Allen" stuck in my craw for some reason.

Eh, no matter.

Mike was ... unique, no doubt about that.  I know a lot of the Euro BBers smoke, but it's pretty rare to encounter an American champ proudly lighting up a chain of filterless Camels.  Apparently he picked up the habit after

A. spending time in the looney bin in the 80s, at which time most of the patients were probably smokers/allowed to smoke
B. becoming a Randroid.  I swear to God, she must've had a smoking fetish.  If she were a Furry, Mike probably would have gravitated toward that perversion!

But nice?  Definitely.  I'm also a member at Ironage, and from all of the Mentzer discussions there over the years, I've only heard one fellow say Mike was rude to him.

Anyhow, hope you're doing well.  Still setting PRs?

Haha listen to you guys.  These fucking clowns talk about bodybuilding as a fucking "Craft............"  It's a science expirement.  The hilarious or should I sad saddest thing about all these old timers is they still can't be honest with themselves.  Working at AirPark Jeep?  Fucking pathetic.  Platz just sounds like a fucking cock in these videos.  Just a straight up asshole.  I mean you have to be an arrogant, self absorbed asshole for the most part to be a professional bodybuilder.  Sorry it's the truth.  There is nothing "crafty" about bodybuilding for the lats 30 years.  It's all about one thing and one thing only........drugs (and genetics).  These guys are all liars.  I mean if it was me I'd be outing everyone left and right...........fuck it.......the industry did fuck all for him after he gave his heart and soul to it.......LOL selling Jeeps and he still defense the industry as some sort of "Craft".  HAHA!

I remember that other Fortney guy, yeah! Saw him at an Arnold walking around with a nametag and was like, Holy shit! LOL Nice guy.

Randroid? Furry? Don't know what you mean.

I am currently one month out from a powerlifting meet, so yeah, I am still pushing it hard. Cannot ever imagine not, to be honest.

635 x 12 = 1RM of about 865lbs :o

Well, those charts are VERY general. For instance, there's no way a guy who squats 900 is gonna hit sets of 10 with 75 percent of his max. Plus, it doesn't take into account what type of weight training the individual has primarily done. But any way you slice it ... Yeah, Platz was STRONG.

He was able to do more reps with the mid-sixes than 12, too. That example was just right before an O when his bodyfat was ziltch.

During the WBF squat-off he had with Fred Hatfield, Tom hit somewhere in the mid-eights when they went for maxes. His reps set can be seen all over YouTube.
