Author Topic: how has getbig changed you? (Read 20371 times)

before coming to getbig i was always really uneasy reading bbing message boards. i constantly wondered "are... are these guys for real?" when they would go on about how hardcore they were in the gym, how much they loved lifting weights, how awesome they were at preparing chicken and rice, what great genetics they had, etc. i felt like the only "normal person" in a room full of crazy meatheads.

i also avoided any steroid boards or discussions about steroids, which wasn't really that hard considering there were more than enough people who wanted to talk my ear off about the latest training techniques and supplements...

coming here was a breath of fresh air in some ways. it also made me much less trusting in general. i imagine most people go through a period in their life where they learn to doubt before they trust. some learn as children, when abused by their parents; some in highschool, when they fall out with their longtime friends; some in the work world, when they realize they've been getting screwed over by their coworkers; some not until they find their wife cheating on them. well, i learned at getbig, i guess, when i finally realized all the "natural bodybuilders" that had made me feel so pathetic were, well, far from natural.

I did not think badly about the fitness or bodybuilding industry. However on here I only see the worst stories are told. I thought it was all about good health, and vanity. Like above, about comic books and heroes, you don't think the worst. Many of the fitness/bodybuilding women/men have profiles on facebook. No problem, but when you really open you eyes what is going on.

It's practically eliminated all my TV watching. I know a lot people say being here is wasting your time and your life. That you just do it to kill time. I don't. Where else can you go where you get to discuss, debated, argue and fight with on such a variety of issued from people all over the world?

We all share one common interest -- bodybuilding, but what keeps us here and keeps us active is just the staggering range of subjects address here and the motley crew of characters that I've gotten to know over the years.

I've pretty much been to all the other bodybuilding boards. The only other one I was active in was IronAge (which is the board that made me aware of this one). But that's because I'm an oldster and they talked about the time when I did follow bodybuilding (I pretty much missed out on the the whole Haney, Dorian era and only caught the 2003 and beyond Coleman era). But even that got old after a couple of years. How many times can you keep talking and looking at pics of Arnold. Plus I got banned. GetBig trains you to speak your mind and put the tiny tits in place. Most boards can't handle that so they just get rid of you,

If I was doomed to solitary confinement and had just one board to choose from for my only contact with the outside world this would by far be the one.

GREAT point. my parents used to always get on my case for "wasting time" on the internet... while they sit downstairs watching american idol, biggest loser, amazing race, etc. etc. etc.

forums are probably my favorite part of the internet. where else can you have discussions with such a wide array of people? so many people spend their time consuming absolutely vapid shit -- newspapers, magazines, blogs, etc. all written by miserable monkeys hammering away in their offices. despite internet forums' reputation for trolling and silliness, you'll nevertheless see more honest, serious discussion and insights in a couple weeks on a good forum, where experts speak their mind on their own free time, than you will in a lifetime of reading the journalism / advertising schlock that suffocates the whole media-filled world.
