The dangers of machines
« on: October 28, 2011, 07:23:16 AM »
After finding out that a lot of getbiggers like to use machines instead of free weight i decided to make a tread letting you know what you are doing to your body.

Smith Machine: the body was not made to lift in a straight line, so if your body needs to move horizontally and you forced it to move vertically then something must bear the strain and that is your joints and tendons and ligaments, for example in the smith machine squat, your hips  knees, shoulders and lower back  absorbs the forces needed to move the weight, this will leave you with low back pain, chronically sore knees and hips or in some cases severe injury to these areas after years of using the smith machine. We will talk about other machines in the gym later on but the point is after years of lifting and your joints are fucked up and you are feeling pain and sore all the time now you know why.

People were born to use machines ... always use one when I buy my cigarettes.

I can agree on this, the human body moves different than a machine possibly can handle.
In my gym I see people even performing upright rows in a smith, pathetic.

What about this - I've seen these new machines that look like the old ones, except it is designed that your whole body rocks back and forth while you're doing the movement - whatever the movement is...??  Anyone seen these?

Some of the newer machines do move in a natural line. Smith machine is probably a bad example.

Yeah that's them!  Except mine have the weight stack.  WTF is that supposed to do?  Maybe it's valid, I don't know!  I don't like the leg extension machine though, there is only meaningful resistance at the top 1/3 of the movement it feels like.

I discussed this with a trainer, and he told it was to prevent cheating, for example arching your back during pressing movements.
True, their leg extention is shitty, fortunately we also have a better one, but their seated leg curl is a good one.

Tell him the human body is designed to move in multiple planes not just one.

I agree 100%, but as a formal trainer myself, I know that most trainers train their clients on machines, simply because it saves them time. Also, many of them aren't aware of biomechanics  :-\

Leg extension puts a lot of force on the knee if you are going to do it only do light reps.

light > high reps > long tension time for your knees

Machines have their place but nothing replaces free weights!!

Use them both for best results and train hard, stop worrying about the fucking minutia.
